Quick One - Mi16 Head Bolt Spacers?

Im building up another MI16 as a spare that i picked up as a box of bits an not having had the head off my current engine I ve come to a self imposed stop before I cause some damage!! I need to find out if i should be fitting spacers under the head bolts ala 8V or not as the joke book doesnt say anything about it and i dont want to wind a bolt through the water pump housing. If I should be running spacers then what thickness do they need to be??

Every one of my Mi headbolts had spacers bud, cant remember the thickness im afraid, and the engine is back in the car so checking them may be a problem! im sure one of the regulars will be along in a moment!

if all 10 are the same size then i think i ve got them. 20 mm long an shaped like a cotton reel??

That sounds right - spacers under all bolts and they are like cotton reels - having stipped an Mi recently there's nothing else to confuse these with.

Thats right mate, they're black in colour if that helps.. Important to put them all on too! I had a block that when the head had been put back the engine 'builder' did exactly what you were afraid of, forgot the spacer and wound the headbolt straight through the side of the block into the waterpump housing.

 

He then thoughfully removed the bolt, filled the hole full of chemical metal and promptly painted over it. Needless to say, i found another block..

There should be 11 spacers, 10 about 10mm thick, one under each bolt but the bolt above the water pump has another thats about 20mm thick as well.

Mine don't look like that Graham, mine were approx 18-22mm ish and resembled a cotton reel. I depth checked all the bolts before i reassembled and they all worked out the fine? My Mi head has a raised section on the bolt that goes through near the waterpump housing, are they all like this?

That's an 8v Graham - Mi16 ones are as described further up the thread, and as said, there's 10 (one per bolt) in total
