Ethos 0 Posted October 20, 2007 Hi guys, We changed the timing earlier and the battery drained, we put the battery in another car to charge it up for a bit to start my car again. Since that the revs are going from 700-1000 and coming up to junctions etc... it's been stalling alot. When the revs are bouncing from 700-1000 if I turn the lights out the engine settles at 1000rpm. If I turn the lights / heated backwindows or whatever on it then starts bouncing again. Does this just sound like a screwed battery? I'm hoping and thinking so! welshpug 1,657 Posted October 20, 2007 sounds more like a regulator fault in the alternator, check the output, it should be able to hold 14 volts even with the lights etc on.
Ethos 0 Posted October 20, 2007 sounds more like a regulator fault in the alternator, check the output, it should be able to hold 14 volts even with the lights etc on. I was thinking because the battery was so flat, it'd be putting even extra strain on the alternator ... therefor not being able to do both? Also all we've done today is change the timing.. and the battery went flat. It wasn't doing this before, so out of the timing and battery I'd guess the battery. I'll also check the regulator too though Tempted to get a battery from a broker tomorrow as one from halfords will probably cost like £40-50!!

Clean those battery terminals and raise the idle to about 1200 (once hot) Then your g/f can drive it without stalling! Actually the alternator sounds like a prime suspect, but your battery seems pretty tired anyway and with the cold weather on the way it probably won't like cranking on cold mornings, anyway.Still got the "gti smile"? Tempted to pop down to united downs and see if they can give me a cheap battery, does it have to be a specific model for the 205... or just any similar looking one that looks newish?! Any idea what halfrauds will charge for a new bat? Also they didn't stock or can order in any washer motors!!! GSF do them for £9 so all is well. And yes, gti smile is there! Just got the missus moaning now about the stalling, it never ends! Thanks again mate
Ethos 0 Posted October 21, 2007 Well got a new battery and raised the idle to around 1100rpm, doesn't drop the revs anymore and seems to be ok! Missus is happy, which means I am! Woop!

Well missus just got back from work, said it stalled twice on her... it's only a 2 mile trip back. I'm driving it 16 miles to work on Wednesday so i'll see what it's like when it's proper warmed up. When dipping the clutch the revs just die. Giving it a full service on Wednesday, is there anything I could test / look at to solve it? If it was me i'd just set the idle revs to like 2k but can't see my girlfriend loving that. Edited October 22, 2007 by Ethos
