robbiecfc 0 Posted October 19, 2007 Hi All, Car running perfectly until I got in to go home from work on Wednesday night. Engine turned over but would not fire. Checked the fuse (far right had side) which was fine. Taxi home... Went back yesterday evening and tried again, 3 turns and it starts! Brought her home the using the scenic route and nothing seemed amiss! No misfires, lumpiness, power seemed normal. Jump in again this morning and same issue, will turn over but will not catch. Based on last night, fuel pump is operational, fuses are ok, which rules out electrical I think, where do I look next? TIK Robbie
Rob_the_Sparky 10 Posted October 19, 2007 It is your ignition amp - been there done that, got the t-shirt! This is after being told by the AA man that it was fine so tore the car apart trying to find what was wrong before eventually trying the amp on another car to find it was the problem. Could also be the wire from the distributer to the amp though I guess. Without this you have no fuel or spark but ignition amp would be my first choice as once it was running you had no trouble. The signal from the dizzy when cranking is smaller then when the engine is running faster, hence they won't start but run fine once they do. Rob
robbiecfc 0 Posted October 19, 2007 Is that sometimes known as a Hall Sensor, ignition module etc i.e. Bosch 0 227 100 12*
Rob_the_Sparky 10 Posted October 22, 2007 The hall sensor is in the distributer and as far as I'm aware can't be replaced seperately. The ignition amp takes the signal from the hall sensors and amplifies it for fuel and spark control. The wire in question connects the hall sensors in the dizzy to the ignition amp. robbiecfc 0 Posted October 24, 2007 Cheers for the help Rob, Grapped a couple of ignition modules out of an Alfa 164 twin spark, they use Bosch 0 0227 100 200 (7 pin). Popped it in no joy. Checked the distibutor cap and found a load of dirt / oil. Cleaned it up, gave the rotor a wipe and success! Started on 3rd revolution. Now must ask my peugeot dealer why they charged me €700 for a full service less than 500 miles ago why the distributor cap and rotor had not been changed. As an aside the Alfa has lots of stuff that could be used in a DIY ignition scenario, i.e Bosch modules *2, 2 * 4 way bosch coil packs etc, etc
simonb 0 Posted October 24, 2007 Just had the same problem but turned out to be the lead from the dizzy to the module - was very annoying and cost be £40 odd quid in parts that wren't required - Live and learn I guess :-(
