Race Engine (1.6 Gti) Modifications?

Recommended Posts

Gaz-2006

Hi all,

I have a 1.6 GTI Peugeot 205 which I have been preparing for circuit racing for over a year now and have finally got it up and running.

I was wondering what sort of modifications are able to be done to go about improving performance. I have already blueprinted the bottom end, lightened flywheel, raised the compression ratio via a head skim to approx 11:1 and am already looking at methods of mapping the ignition timing and intercepting AFM signals and HALL effect via a 'piggyback' to play with the ECU (as i work for a company that specialises in engine management).

However, I have a limited knowledge of these engines as far as modifications are concerned. The sort of things i'm looking for are what can be done to improve things from a fairly standard setup. This is a pure race car and one of the things i heard mentioned a while ago was possibly removing the auxillary air valve as it is not needed due to it being a race car and not really needing to idle..

Also, another main thing has got to be which adjustable fuel pressure regulator would be worth going for as it would be preferable to have one of these available when tuning the car on the rolling road. Any suggestions/experiences.

I know it is fairly vague but I was wondering if anybody with more experience of these cars could throw any suggestions at me so I could possibly improve the performance of the car that would be great!

Best Regards

Gary

For this you have 3 option's, You can use a Golf Hall effect Dizzy for the engine position and drive the mapped ignition off of that or combine the 2 with a proper ECU as the standard stone age ECU isn;t the most effecient thing's.

Or if you can remap Motronic then find a late ZX 1.9 Volcane, 405 SRi/GTX ECU, Loom and coilpack and fit that, does away with the AFM too

Thanks for the reply!

The only thing is in my championship I am not allowed to remove the AFM so ideally need to still have that as the load sensor. Is there a mappable ECU that would be capable of running with the Bosch AFM instead of a MAP sensor? as most I have found do away with the AFM. The only other option is something entirely custom which will take an age to do!

Any more info on removing the cold start and benefits etc?

Is the Golf Hall Effect dizzy from the mk2 1.8 16v? And anybody have a good idea of where to source one?

Regards

So if you are not allowed to remove it as a whole, can you strip the internals and still run an aftermarket ecu.

Main benefit when removing the cold start is less/ tidier pipework , and something less to worry about when its not running right .

Yes that is the dizzy , i got mine from GSF
