gti_al 1 Posted October 13, 2007 Yesterday my radiator developed a large hole, and dumped all the coolant in a very short time. I noticed the temp gauge move faster than normal, so killed it straight away and found the prob. I would prefer a warning light though... How does the standard warning light work, and are there common problems with it? The thing looks ok, but did absolutely nothing when it emptied itself yesterday. Has anyone improved on the standard setup?
GLPoomobile 958 Posted October 13, 2007 Assuming that Aussie 205s are the same as ours, when the coolant gets too low you should get a warning symbol illuminate in the center section of the dash, and I'd guess that the stop light would come on with it. There is a sensor in the coolant header tank (in the cap on Ph1/1.5, and in the base on Ph2) so maybe the sensor is duff on yours.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted October 13, 2007 Like Steve says, if you have the white header tank the level sensors are well known to get gunked up internally & stop working. I've managed to clean one out before with some solvent & WD40 but its a yearly thing to keep them working or at least check it still works. Stop light doesn't come one with the low water light but the handbook odes say you should stop asap & top it up. Graham.
gti_al 1 Posted October 13, 2007 (edited) I know the warning light well - it used to come on for no reason at all! If they are prone to getting stuck that probably explains it. I'll pull it out and have a look, and hopefully get it working again. I was hoping someone had a more up to date foolproof system, but i don't mind checking these things recently. I'm just glad it died yesterday, and not on sunday when i was giving it a workout in the mountains...
