mos 1 Posted October 9, 2007 Hi, i am whipping my 1.6 gti be3 gearbox out on friday to do a rear main oil seal and whilst its out i want to take the opportunity to replace the standard 5th gear with one from a mi16 or diesel model ratio 0.757 (0.76). the problem is i dont actually have the fith gear i need so i spoke to the one of the local gearbox specialist near me who said he would probably have one, but instead of giving him the ratio i would need to tell him how many teeth are on each of the two cogs that make up the mi16/dieel fith gear. well i haven't got a clue and a search has turned up nothing so can anyone tell me how many teeth the two cogs have, or better still can anyone supply me with one, you would probably have to be fairly local to me as i need it by friday so i would have to be able to whizz by and pick it up no later than thursday night thanks mark
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted October 9, 2007 I've got an old Be1 diesel gearbox in pieces downstairs with a 0.757 fifth that you can have for a few bear tokens. The teeth on each gear are; 37 x 28. Graham.
mos 1 Posted October 9, 2007 (edited) Hi Graham, with mine being a be3 gear box and your a be1 are they compatible? thanks mark I've got an old Be1 diesel gearbox in pieces downstairs with a 0.757 fifth that you can have for a few bear tokens. pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted October 9, 2007 with mine being a be3 gear box and your a be1 are they compatible? Hi Mark, I pre-empted this question, I have a Be3 gearbox partially stripped so I removed the fifth gear from that & tried the Be1 diesel fifth on the input shafts. It fits perfectly. Graham. danpug 1 Posted October 9, 2007 I had an mi16 5th gear in my 1.6 box on an mi16 and i personally would not do it again. Its good for long journeys but if you gave it beans in 4th then changed to 5th the revs would drop right down really noticeably.

I used to run a gearbox on my 1.9 8v with this fifth & the equivilent of a 1.9 fourth & hardly used fifth when I was on an A or B road blast. Fourth was good for over 110mph. Graham. Sandy 191 Posted October 9, 2007 Yep, it'll be over 115mph for mos with his rev limit.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted October 9, 2007 Don't forget that the Mi 5th uses a different dia bush as the input shaft is a different Dia on them for some reason unknown to me.

The one I have here is from a diesel & it fits the Be3 that I'm stripping to swap fourth & fifth on when we find the gears, will this be different to Mos' be3? Graham. Miles 331 1 Cars Posted October 9, 2007 It might, I;ve never had any dealing with oil powered boxes but I know thats the bush's are available to fit box input shaft's, just don;t know which one as I;ve got a huge box of bushes!!
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted October 9, 2007 The Be1 diesel fith gear & bush fits the input shaft of the Be3 box I asked you about ratios for that measures 24.5mm. I guess it might still be a suck it & see though. Graham.
Sandy 191 Posted October 10, 2007 Perhaps, I swapped an Mi16 fifth onto Danpug's 1.6 box with no bother, can't remember what was what BE1 or 3 wise though. Did it on the car (just!)
danpug 1 Posted October 12, 2007 The 1.6 box was be3 and the mi 5th was a be1 iirc.
petert 585 Posted October 12, 2007 I always thought the diesel 5th was 0.81:1 like the Mi16x4?
Sandy 191 Posted October 12, 2007 Depnds what Diesel you mean, some are 0.76, some are 0.66.
