Oil Coolers

Right, I am in the middle of swapping my 1.9 engine for another one (8v) and have a question or two about the different oil coolers that are on the engines.

 

The new engine that I have bought has the conventional oil cooler with the small radiator thing that bolts into the fan cowling whereas the engine that's comin out of my car has a water-cooled cooler which sits in front of the gearbox and is fed by 2 hoses 'spliced' into the top radiator hose. This also has the oil filter on the end of it instead of on the block.

 

My question is which of these is best for use on a normal road car? Can they easily be swapped if need be and can either system be used with power steering? I ask this as I have PAS and I am hoping this won't get in the way if I fit the conventional cooler.

 

Any help/advice appreciated

i bought an oil cooler with the small radiator thinking it would be better than the water cooled oil.

 

was told by a few people on here that the oil rad is next to no good

 

i tried offering it up to my engine while it was out but it wouldnt mate up due to the power steering/alternator bracket being bigger than the none power steering alternator bracket

My first choice would be the water-cooled version as in theory it's better as it also helps the oil warm up quicker from cold.

It's more of a Heat Exchanger than a cooler, It heats the engine oil up quicker so the effency level is attained quicker too, Cooling wise it does little when pushed very hard and one heats the other up quicker than it would without it, Nice thing about it is it makes changing the Filter nice and easy

IIRC the standard oil filter won't fit with p.a.s alternator bracket I have a leaky rad type cooler which leaks down over the front valence, so i'M just going to bin it all at next oil change. Don't think they're really necessary on a road car anyway?

I can't say i've noticed the lack of oil cooler on my cars that its been removed from, including my mi16.

I agree, I'm sure the reason they fitted the oil waterheat exchanger was due to the fitment of PAS on later cars.

Just thought I would bring this back up to mention that I have fitted the radiator type oil cooler to my car with PAS despite being told on here I couldn't. I have no idea why it shouldn't have fit as I didn't do any modifying to make it all fit, it just bolted on. Just thought it might be useful for people doing a search

No one strictly said it wouldn't fit just that Peugeot didn't fit, they used water/oil heat exchanger type instead.

 

TBh in the Uk for a mainly road use car the oil cooler isn't needed anyway.

I know the engines run fine without a cooler. I was just stating that I was told on here that an oil cooler can't be used with PAS and I was just stating that it is possible for future reference

All the 205 Mi16's i have had came with a water cooled oil cooler i always change it for the original 205 radiator thingy. The problem is, the oil filter is really difficult to remove as it is so close to the rad. I have a massive oil cooler which fits really badly in a heavily modded rad cowl so i wish i could fit a water cooled one. Has anyone got a 205 mi16 with a water cooled oil cooler fitted?

You can use a shorter oil filter if space is limited. The filter for a Renault 19 16V fits iirc.
