westy 0 Posted October 5, 2007 Hi, A couple of days ago I managed to completely muller my 1.9 8v, It threw a rod through the front of the block. Spectacular to say the least. Now, I've hopefully sourced myself a new engine from a member on here, And seeing as my engine bay will be empty for a week or so at least, What should I be looking at doing while everything's out? I'll be doing the cambelt/tensioner/waterpump on the new engine before it goes in. I was thinking about all the coolant hoses, inspecting and replacing where needed, as well as a new set of gear rods probably. Hopefully if I have time, i'll be de-greasing and jetwashing the 'bay. Is there anything else I should look at doing? My old engine had a brand new clutch in less than a month ago, so I'll be transferring that over. I use my car on a day-to-day basis, so I want everything to be done properly the first time, instead of going back to fix odds and sods in the future. Any thoughts? Thanks. danpug 1 Posted October 5, 2007 Grab yourself a set of miles gear rods with clips, change the metal water pipe on inner wing if it hasn't been done already, also inspect all the engine mounts whilst its out. Get some new driveshaft oil seals too.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted October 5, 2007 Check for rust under the servo area of the car caused by brake fluid leaking, Clutch Cable, Gearbox Cross Shaft bushes (Cheap) clutch will feel like new again then, Oil breather pipe's namly tyhe filler one and the oil tower to sump as these are prone to failing and the oil tower as these deposit wire into the sump if old. Also worth getting some new bushes for teh Subframe mounted 'L' bracket and checking the ball is tight too.
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted October 6, 2007 how about new cables for clutch and accelerator, even the speedo. So much easier to fit with an empty bay.
westy 0 Posted October 6, 2007 Luckily, half that stuff's already been replaced in the past few months: New clutch/cable, new speedo cable, I'll give Miles a call about gear rods.. I'll be checking all the subframe bolts/bushes too. Its also had a new oil filler recently, with some new hoses. Miles - where would I be best getting the L bracket bushes from? I'm quite tempted to sort myself out a quickshift while i'm there, I can get the bracket off easier. Re: the metal water pipe - are these main dealer only? Are they a pain to swap? Thanks
Jer309GTi 3 Posted October 6, 2007 Re: the metal water pipe - are these main dealer only? Are they a pain to swap? GSF do them. And easy to fit. Make sure you give it a few coats of Hammerite before you fit it otherwise it will be rusty again in no time at all
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted October 6, 2007 The bushes can be got from Pug for a couple of quid Just don;t pay the silly Ebay prices for the metal pipe
Alastairh 47 Posted October 6, 2007 (edited) If it was me, id do the following: Clean bay Cambelt tensioner + pump (btw your pump will still have alot of life in it as i replaced it the week before you bought it). Clutch cable. Metal water pipe £12 from pug and takes 2 minutes. If the gear linkages actually show age then yeah, but if i remember driving that car they felt rather positive. Swap your clutch over. Just look over breather hoses to see if there is any splits, and give them a quick clean Im impressed you done a rod though Al Edited October 6, 2007 by Alastairh
