Which Fool At Peugeot Decided The Ecu Should Be Mounted In The Open?&a

Recommended Posts

KRISKARRERA

On the 405 the ecu is mounted onthe inner nearside wing in a small area between the interior of the car and the bulkhead. This area is not sealed in any way therefore it will fill with water when it's raining or if like me you use alot of water when washing the car. There is a drainhole that leads immediately to the wheel arch. But if it's really p*ssing it down I reckon the water could be very slow to drain out when there's also water spraying off the tyre at high velocity and of course most people never think to clean this area and it fills with mud and leaves.

My couple of recent engine cutting outtings coincided with it raining. Might be linked.

It shouldn't be right out in the open, there is usually a cover over the ecu which keeps the water off it.

Had same problem. Had car parked under some stupid tree for some time from which small flowers filled that drain hole and when rain came it flooded ECU area and ECU itself. Luckily I checked ECU prior starting the car and drained water out.

Cheers

Yeah that's in the first pic Graham, but as you can see the inside of that cover is full of water marks so it's obviously totally inadequate.

An ecu test is something silly like £40 so I might as well borrow one or get one cheap from somewhere to see if this has been damaged by the water.

Worth sticking it in the airing cupboard, with cover off, to dry it out first.

WTF is 'Speccy'?

Yeah I could try that.

Don't know if you can see from the pic but the PCB looks like it's got varnish on it - it looks wet, though it's not wet to the touch.

Speccy is Cassie's name for Anthony.

Anthony is one of a number of forum members who ruin my threads by making comments about it being a 405 and that it should be killed so the engine can be donated to a 205.

The Bosch ECU enclosure (The alloy box) should be 100% watertight. It has a rubber gasket around it so water should not be able to get in even if it is really wet. You can see the plug/socket is well sealed as there is no corrosion there.

You do appear have had moisture in there though judging by the last picture.

The varnish on the ECU PCB will not offer a lot of protection. Once water gets into electronics it is, in my experience, nearly impossible to dry out and almost immediately, corrosion sets in and this slowly eats its way through componet wires and the copper PCB tracks; it will slowly kill your ECU. I've tried to revive PC Motherboards that have got wet in the past. They work for a while and then fail.

Get another ECU Kris and see if you can relocate it indoors as on a 205 or go to a scrappy and get hold of a Xantia ECU box. These really do a good job of keeping water out and if you can mount one, that'll do the job well. Else, buy a splashproof electrical enclosure and house the ECU in there.

Least it wont have that problem in a 205 :)

Judging by the marks on the case someone had been into my ecu in the past. The seal had deteriorated a bit too, so only option would be to use sealant.

I suppose it could be routed inside the car though there's no storage compartment for it on the 405.

Xantia ECU box sounds like a good idea.

I'm looking into other things before I condem the ecu so we shall see...

Kris, on my ABS ECU that I took off (mounted next to the engine ECU, as you know) the metal casing at the bottom was actually rusted through so badly there was a hole in it.

Bloody hell, no idea what mine was like, Miles removed it.

Wouldn't be so bad if it could be mounted higher but then the loom plug would hit the bonnet.
