Craigb 2 Posted October 1, 2007 i took my road rally car out for a run at the weekend , and discovered a misfire . on inspection it appears that oil is leaking into the distributor. I haven't taken it off yet , but does anyone have an exploded diagram of the sealing arrangement at that end of the camshaft, as that's where i think it is coming from ? i had a look on stuartmcguires site and couldn't find it . ideas anyone? GLPoomobile 958 Posted October 1, 2007 By no means speaking as an expert but I would have thought the only way for oil to get in to the dizzy was if the O ring between the dizzy and the housing was knackered (or not there at all). But if this was the case I'd expect to see oil weeping out below the dizzy too. Whip it off and check the O ring basically.
Craigb 2 Posted October 1, 2007 I am going to take it off tonight , but i think it is coming down the shaft , not past the O ring on the dizzy housing ...
Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted October 1, 2007 From memory there isn't a seal on the end of the cam, the dizzy is sealed to the head and oil is present where the dizzy connects to the end of the cam. The dizzy comes as a "sealed" unit so not sure exploded diagrams of it are going to be easy to get hold of. You can get it apart but you have to drive out a pin where the dizzy couples to the cam, you should see it easily enough if you take it apart. I've looked at it myself and even bashed the pin a bit but never got brave enough to hit it hard enough to drive the pin out! Rob P.S. are you sure the misfire is caused by this leak? It isn't unusual to find some oil leaking into the dizzy cap without problems.

This is correct - my 1.9 GTi has just had its Dizzy O ring seal replaced as a leak was detected there. I'm told its a common place for them to leak from. Craigb 2 Posted October 2, 2007 P.S. are you sure the misfire is caused by this leak? It isn't unusual to find some oil leaking into the dizzy cap without problems. It would appear that it is . I cleaned it all out last night , put it back and it ran like a dream . Just something to add to the pre event spanner check
