How Much To Have A Gearbox Fitted?

Recommended Posts

Masekwm

The gear change on my 205 is getting worse by the day, 1st is pretty much a no go unless the engine is off, so I'm resigned to changing the gearbox for a second hand or recon.

Anyone know how much I'm likely to be paying?

Thanks in advance.

First make sure the gear rod pivot bolted to the subframe isn't loose! Typical 205 gearchange gremlin. Access to tighten is via a cut out in the subframe (13mm socket on extension bar) whilst stopping the pivot from turning (another 13mm IIRC) Here's hoping that's the problem

I would have a look at the linkage first and the arm that bolts onto the sub-frame as the nut often comes loose and cane make it hard to find gears.

If it is the box you can find a second hand one for about £50 clutch kit £60 and DIY it ant that hard.

Are the gearbox to engine bolt's done up, Is the clutch arm broken, is the cable OK and are the linkages as said all done up and tight? Check these first before changing the box,

Time wise is about 4 hour's but it depends how rusty the bolts are to remove

Did you try adjusting the clutch cable yet ? It's a simple job. Takes 5 minutes. Locate the end of the clutch cable in the engine bay. Slacken the lock nut and tighten the other nut a few turns. This makes the biting point higher and often makes it easier to get into first gear.
