Converting Pas Rack To Non Pas Rack

Recommended Posts

GTI6BOY

Hello,

I want to remove my pas rack from my dimma and replace with a non pas rack.

The reason is i have unwanted play and would like to feel the whole road.

I have figured out that i need to remove my pump and put a non pas aux belt on?

Remove the fluid pot and all pipes?

Remove pas rack and replace with non pas rack

The thing i am worried about is something to do with a longer steering coloum?

Am i missing something off my list? and whats this about the coloum?

Thanks

All that sounds about right, but you'll also need a different alternator mount, one from a non-pas car. You may also need the lower half of the steering column as the column & rack mate together differently.

Hi GTI,

I don't think that the symptoms of 'not feeling the road' or of 'having unwanted play' are fundamental qualities of the PAS rack. Surely you must have something amiss / worn components.

I have found the PAS system to suit the car perfectly. You don't realise it is there until very slow manoeuvring, it seems to be very unobtrusive compared to modern systems, and with my old man reactions I certainly can't feel it when pressing on.

defo the rack, anyway the pump is broke and makes terrible noises and more and i prefer my other 205 without pas

Does anyone know which part of the coloum i need and how i unbolt it ect?

just a 13mm from inside, why not just unbolt all your powersteering pipes and pump and leave the rack on it??

As has been said, you'll need the intermediate shaft as well as a rack. One thing to be aware of is there were two different length shafts which must match the corresponding upper shaft (the one that goes to the steering wheel).

The upper shaft uj lengths can be 43mm or 55mm. If you fit a longer intermediate shaft to the the longer upper shaft then the bottom uj (by the rack) will be at too tight an angle which will wear rapidly and cause heavy steering.

I found this out the hard way when I got a *ahem* well-known pug "specialist" (and I use the term loosely) near Petersfield to convert the PAS steering on my Sorrento Green car to non-PAS.

I've sorted it out now and fitted the shaft from a later Pug and hey presto.... lighter steering. Serves me right for being lazy and not doing it myself in the first place :)

You should notice the pleasant side-effect of an increase in midrange power with all the power steering pump btw. :P
