[car_restoration] My Sorrento Rebuild

this going to be one fine sorrento :D

im a little bit envious :( i've only got to the stage of stripping it completely.

is it just me or do all sorrento's suffer from bad paint fade and laquer peeling on the roof, wings and doors?

 

im gona use this as insperation to get mine finished!

 

this is the state of it now

It will certainly make an ass out of me if something does go wrong. I'm going to tighten everything up just that little bit more now :( By the way the powder coaters are called 4 Most Coatings based near Lingfield and the platers are called Y &B plating based near Gatwick airport. :) The coaters are more expensive than the last place i used but he's more thorough. I've probably spent a good £400 on coating but its well worth it.

 

Pete, that picture reminds me of when i was stripping mine! loads of old fragile plastic clips breaking in two and plenty of rusted bolts rounding off, ah the good old days. I hated stripping mine. I made a conscious effort to label everything, bag up all the bolts and store everything so when it came to rebuilding I knew where all the parts were. It took ages!

 

I'm glad I'm onto the rebuild stage now but you have to keep with it. The car is stored at my parents so I try and get down to do something every weekend. Once you get it re-sprayed (if thats what your doing?) and its all clean and tidy sitting in the garage that will give you the impetus to carry on if your struggling that is ;)

 

I'm unsure about the paint. What year is yours? as mines a fairly 'new' one i think all the later 205s had crap new paint because of the CFC issues of the old toxic paint. I'm sure Andy can tell you more :D My bonnet was ruined, it was re-sprayed 6 times during its life!

Yep, mine has laquer peeling along the top of the boot panel, all the way back to the plastics :)

its a 1990 1.9

 

i was really into stripping it down at first and rushed into it :)

i didnt mark or bag parts up :D

so i had to put it all back and start again

 

it was/is in a bad way :(

it had a black bonnet and grill

2 dented wings with no laquer

a big scrape down the pass side rear quarter

the drivers door is nearly white with fade!

and it needs welding under the rear seat ;)

and to top it all off i found that it had had a bump when i took the pass wing off (but it wasnt recorded on the hpi check)

 

good luck with it

and i hope to see it in the flesh when its finished

 

these colour cars are becomming more and more desirable so its great to see them getting done properly

i like to think it will one day in its life!!

 

may i ask,how much was the new roof skin?

 

also,the fuel filter,think im going to copy with that as i have had my pipe come off before while driving down the road,luckily the engine cut out before anything started getting to hot or it might have been another story :)

He does love his Peugeot's though B) He was almost in tears tonight because I picked him up in the Laguna. "Daddy's blue car! - Not mummy's car!" was all he would say ;)

ive plated my sorrento sunroof but doesnt look 'that' great!!!

 

and im thinking next year she might go in for a full re-spray any way,thanks for the info though mate:)

sorrento's are by far the best :)

Was just scanning the topic again and noticed on Page 2 that Ed mentions he found a non sunny roof lining in a scrappy.

Andy, Poomobile is right i had some luck finding one but i was working with an apprentice sparks one friday who said he was mates with a guy who works in the local scrap yard. So after work (well during work :P ) we made a trip down to see if any 205s were about. We spent 10 minutes walking around and thought it was going to be a fruitless visit when we saw his mate and asked about any 205s. He said they had one, a graphite grey 1.6 which we had walked straight past previously.

 

It had a 206 on its roof and you could only just squeeze in the broken passenger door with others cars tight up against it each side, but when i looked inside i couldn't believe my luck a non sunny headlining in black! :rolleyes: so the next day i went back as soon as they opened and spent about an hour and a half slowly carefully easing the headlining out. It came out in one piece although they wouldn't take the 206 off the top or pull the car out so i could work on it. The car was also full of water but i was determined to get it out. It was a handy really as i pocketed all the little screws from around the rear quarter windows which i had lost from mine.

 

Once back home i gave it a good hoover down and had my dad help me fit it. I used some strong carpet adhesive a mate gave me to stick it to the roof. I have got some pictures around here somewhere.

 

Anyway I'm going to the Maldives for 2 weeks today :) so the build will obviously stop while we are away but as soon as I'm back I will have all the parts needed to make her a rolling shell again and i will write a massive update with plenty of pictures.

I wouldn't think so :lol:

A quick update!

 

Heres some pics of the second hand head lining from the scrapyard described in my previous post.

So i've now got all the rear beam parts (cheers matt) and will be building it up this week! I've also now bought an o/e cambelt and tensioners for the GTi6 lump. All I need now is a Mi16 clutch kit and the engine is ready to go in. I've also bought a mrk 2 escort top engine mount as described by Spiky in a recent thread. The mount is smaller thus allowing more space between the cambelt cover and master cylinder. I'm awaiting arrival of this after the christmas break. I will try this first but if its not right i will hunt down the smaller Citroen zx mount ;).

 

A new 405 throttle cable (longer) and a new speedo cable have also arrived with a set of standard rear beam mounts.

I also picked up my powder coated hubs and rebuilt the front arms with the newly coated top mount, group N rubbers and new Bilstein shock absorbers. The only thing I do still require at some point is some bumb stops and gaitors but i'll worry about this at a later date. I also had the front ARB coated to match the subframe :) I bought a decent set of 309 driveshafts ages ago which needed cleaning up and new CV boots, while i had the shafts in pieces i decided to paint the shafts with black gloss enamel to protect them in the future.

So while i was waiting for all these bits and pieces to be ordered i set about the brake lines. As i'm using GTi6 front set up and standard rears with no compensators i decided to use a Wilwood bias valve. I'm using the 1.6 brake set up with one line going to the back with a T piece off to he two calipers. So i had to make something to mount the valve onto which turned out to be an old loom support which i took in a box of bits to the powder coaters just in case i might use it. I think it turned out quite neat. So with the subframe complete and back on the car and the brake lines, servo&m/c, washer bottle and header tank in place the engine bay started to take shape.
