Oil Pressure, Oil Temp & Cooling Fan

Recommended Posts

Just wondering about a few things on my 205 1.9 (1993) GTi which I've had for about 7 years.

1) What should the oil pressure be when cold and hot idle ? Mine is between 1/3 and 1/2 when cold and just above the red zone on hot idle. It has always been like this all the time I've had it. The engine still runs fine and it has got full oil in it and stuff. I've noted that it says you should use the correct grade of oil and I've tried different oils, but the reading is still the same.

2) My oil temp gauge hardly moves at all, despite how long I use the car for.

3) The most annoying one - is the cooling fan supposed to be so loud and stay on for literally 10 - 15 mins after I shut the car down. Even if I've only driven it a few miles it always cuts in the fans and often leaves them going for 10 or so minutes. Its embarassing having everyone look at the car.

Note: These have always been the case for my car since I can remember. It drives fine and the engine was rebuilt earlier this year with new shells, rings and so forth. Thought I'd ask in case I'd missed something.

The oil pressure varies from car to car as the gauge isn't all that accurate. Normally it will go straight to the top when the car is stone cold, and drop to about 1/2 within a few minutes. With the engine hot the gauge does read quite low at idle, but as long as it rises when reved then I wouldn't worry.

The lowest mark on the oil temp is about 60C, so it does take a while to start moving. I don't think mine has even gone higher than just past the 2nd mark.

Thanks for that Ryan. The oil pressure does indeed rise when revved, but it can be a little worrying when at idle and you take sharp corners (i.e. putting clutch in) as the oil moves and makes the warning light come on - even though I know its full as I check it often. ;)

Any ideas on the cooling fan?

My fan stays on for a while also, but this is because I fitted a very low temp. switch in the rad.
