Guest marsred Posted September 24, 2007 I've checked the search and can't find anything so here goes... When I'm sat in slow moving traffic for any length of time, and usually in the rain, I'm getting steam coming from under the bonnet usually from around the n/s headlight. At first I thought i was overheating but it happened this morning and the temps were all fine. It might just be rain hitting hot enigne parts but it seems to be a little too much for that?? Any help would be excellent! (Its a 1990 1.9 non-cat by the way)
SamGTi 0 Posted September 24, 2007 I would say probably just the rain as it hits the radiator. My car does it after I have washed it and there is standing water on the grill.
Guest marsred Posted September 24, 2007 Cheers, that's what i'm hoping. It does only seem to happen in the rain. It was just the queue of school kids waiting for the bus pointing at me that got the old paranoia going a bit!
tom_m 0 Posted September 24, 2007 yup, nothing to worry about at all mine does it all the time
GLPoomobile 958 Posted September 24, 2007 One of my previous 205s did this and got gradually worse. The radiator fins had corroded, as they do, but had gone far enough to leak a tiny amount of water. So you may want to have a closer inspection when it happens. I suppose another possibility could be water getting in under the bonnet or through the grill and then steaming off of the headlight or fan resistor thingies. Then it got worse - my radiator fins too had eventually died. One new radiator later and all is well with the world.
jackherer 543 Posted September 24, 2007 Try a short run with the rad cap off, it wont pressurise so if it stops steaming you know you have a leak. Does the water level drop at all?
Guest marsred Posted September 24, 2007 Cheers for replies chaps Pretty sure it won't be the rad fins as its quite a new readiator and it does only seem to be in the rain, although I haven't been sat in traffic for long in the dry (as when it rains there's more traffic in the morning so I'm sat longer and Bob's your Uncle, steam appears). Next time it stops raining (about June 2008 i expect) i'll go for a drive and leave the engine running on the drive for a bit and see what happens. I couldn't really check it out when it happened as I'm in my suit (its raining remember) and on a very accurately timed drive to work in which every minute counts. I'll assume its rain for now and get on with replacing my o/s driveshaft rather than creating new problems!
