Engine Mounts

right lets start at the beginning,

 

i started to notice a knocking when i backed off the accelerator, so had a look round the front end noting seemed out of place so looked at the engine mounts looked like they could do with new ones.

 

so i ordered some bbm mounts, i got home form work early so decided to have a go.....

 

i started with the top mount the easiest one hahaha. i undone the nuts on top of the engine took the bracket off and the old mount just fell apart not a good sign, it says that the mount should unscrew from the body, well i couldnt do anything to get it to budge, the bit of mount thats left wobbles which i dont think it should, surely it should be a nice tight fit if its been screwed in??? (it feels like its got a nut on the bottom but not done up all the way)

 

after a few hours of trying with the 1st mount i moved on to the second mount under the battery and tray, well to start the screws are too rusty and siezed solid to get the battery tray off so decided to try and do the mount anyway, well i removed all the screws from the mount and nothing, i couldnt do anything to move it, i used loads of wd40 to move it but nothing.

 

as i was slowly losing the plot i brefly looked at the third one, is this an easy one, it looks like its quite easy am i right???

 

the main thing im after is any hints or tips??? has anyone ever had these problems? or anyone got any tips??????

had same problem wirth topmount, use a chissel and a hammer to knock it round m8 it will come off no probs

rapidmi was your mount spinning to start with?? my mount spins liked it has stripped a thread?

 

is there a nut underneath or is it tapped into the bodywork?

its a captive nut but it sounds like yours has come loose.

 

The bottom mount is a bit tricky, you need to take the long driveshaft out and then you ideally need a press to get the old bush out and the new one in.

The Top Mount on the ds is just screwed into a captive Nut - which you can not reach with any tool - so just the mentioned Hammer and Chisel will work.

The one under the Battery only has two screws and the Nut to hold the Gearbox - otherwise it should come loose. Try a chisel and Hammer again here.

The third one on the backside of the Engineblock is by far the worst of all three. You have to get the driverside Driveshaft out - which can be a pain in ...s - and afterwards remove the whole alloy casting from the Block - next you need a Hydraulic Press to press the old out and the new in.

thanks lads,for the bottom mount getting hold of a press is no problem (engineer by trade) is it a long process to get the driveshaft out and replace the mount??

 

for the top mount if the hammer and chisel technique doesnt work what would you say about drilling out the old mount??

and how would i solve the captive nut thats fallen off??

 

aswell the two little squre buffers, how do you get on the nut at the back?

 

arent theses engine mounts fun!

Free the hub nut. remove the track rod end and the bottom balljoint from the hub. On the lower mount you will see 2 oval headed bolts, loosen the nuts on them turn them so they aren't retaining the shaft. (You may need to drift the shaft out of the mount, dont try tugging it free, or you will bugger the shaft. :) ) remove the hub nut completley, pull the suspension away from the shaft, remove the shaft. get summat to catch the gear oil first. undo the 3 bolts holding the mount to the engine block, take it to work and swap em over. Put the car back together, renew the gear oil, double check alls on tidy. Job done.

thanks craig f90 that seems pretty straight forward, ill have a go at that one last i think get the easier ones done first :blush:

 

ive managed to do the top mount, with a lot of smacking with a club hammer and chisel (then drilling out when hitting it didnt work)

 

im going to do the one under the battery tray this weekend no doubt the drill will have to come out again because i had a look and the screws are rusted solid,

To do the gearbox mount, do you have the large nut for the 'box removed, the 2 small 13mm ones and the 'box supported from underneath? If so, allow the 'box to drop a few inches and jack it up again. Chances are this will pop the bugger straight off
