timb1046 1 Posted September 20, 2007 ok, i've done a search and come up with feck all so... the problem: the driveshaft on the off side (drivers) is leaking as it comes out the gear box (the shaft before the CV joint) and when i drive i have a rumbling/vibrations, only when i put power on, its defo not wheel bearing related. or the ball joint. so im thinking gearbox. anyone else had simular problems? if the gearbox is fecked whats the price of another one? and is it an easy job? cheers Tim
swordfish210 20 Posted September 20, 2007 sounds like the driveshaft oil seal. it's not a hard job, you just have to remove the driveshaft and the oil seal will prise out with a screwdriver and the new one will just push in.
AdamP 0 Posted September 20, 2007 To get the driveshaft out, take off the wheel, undo the lower ball joint and pull the hub carrier outwards with the driveshaft attached. Easy as pie
M@tt 77 Posted September 21, 2007 also loosen the 3 nuts on the top of the strut holding it to the car until they are almost off it makes swinging the strut out alot easier
timb1046 1 Posted October 21, 2007 i replaced the oil seal and got the shaft back in however the shaft has come out of the gearbox again, im not sure why, it was out slightly in the firstplace also, but im wandering why its come out as i out it in as far as i could, should you need alot of force to get it back in? Redtop 14 2 Cars Posted October 21, 2007 What sort of condition are the 2 11mm nuts and the bolts holding the carrier bearing like? Have they come lose and what condition are they in? They could have come slack, allowing the d/s driveshaft to move out of it's original position.
timb1046 1 Posted October 22, 2007 the two 11mm nuts were both in good condition and have been tightened well. so i dont think its these, is there anything else it could be, its out of the gearbox by more than 5mm and so the oil seal is doing feck all where it is due to the gap. pug309twin40s 1 Posted October 23, 2007 check the condition of the gearbox mount under the battery, my mates 205 kept moving the drivers side driveshaft out the gearbox and after couple of new seals and a new driveshaft was found the gearbox mount was shot, replaced and all was fixed.
