jtek 0 Posted September 20, 2007 around six months ago i changed both the clutch and cable on my 89 1.6 with a BE1 box. i used a luk clutch and a cable from gsf. the clutch has always been relatively heavy but not uncomfortably heavy. anyway, after a 'spirited' drive yesterday, i was driving into my road and i let the clutch out into first, and BANG, the end of the clutch cable with the threaded section and spacer shot out of the bottom of the car. i know clutch cables can fail after time, but this one only had about 3000 miles on it with very little abuse to the clutch, and it snapped at the point where the cable connects into the metal threaded section. does anybody know if its a crap quality part from gsf? if so i will get an official pug one. failing that could it be anything else wrong that would be putting more strain on the cable then necessary? maybe i will carry a spare with me from now on haha thanks
Anthony 1,003 Posted September 20, 2007 I've never had nor heard of any problem with GSF clutch cables. Could be the pressure plate is putting excessive load on the clutch cable and cause premature failure, or prehaps you were just unlucky - depends how heavy it is really? jtek 0 Posted September 20, 2007 i had a 1600 306 before this and although that was a tu/ma setup, the clutch felt very similar to this, if were to keep my foot down on the clutch for five or ten minutes then it would probably begin to ache but i am a weakling lol. it did seem utterly random as i was easing the clutch in gently at that point and earlier in the day it had been dropped pretty hard, but maybe that did the damage. the pin between the clutch arm and the pressure plate arm seems fairly worn so i may see if i can get another from pug, maybe its a sign for me to get some breakdown cover because it was fairly lucky for it to snap outside my house
j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted September 20, 2007 If the pedal felt normal i would say either the thrust bearing has broke, possibly pressure plate related or your just unlucky with the cable.
