Clonking/knocking On Let Off? :s

Recommended Posts

kate205gti

ive done a search but not found anything - not sure what to look under!

i have a faint knock from under the car when i take my foot off the accelerator, it does it mainly at low speeds, its not a loud bang but u can hear it and can def feel it with your foot on the floor

it does it mainly at low speeds (or at least more noticaeble then), when you take your foot off the accelerator sharply. It wasnt making the noise when revving the engine at a standstill, or when letting off gradually, and not when braking either

Ive tried moving the engine by hand and seems pretty secure - i took the drivers wheel off and checked a few bolts but was getting late so going to have a proper look tomorrow

any ideas before i start of what its likely to be please? :D doesnt seem to affect the steering or the braking of the car

cheers ;)

I would check that ubber spec exhaust to see if its near the sub frame/gear linkages etc.

Put it on ramp and give it a quick prod/wiggle

All your bolts are lose

Subframe tends to be more of a crack as to a clunk

top R/H engine mounting I reckon, whip the arm off and see if you can move the rubber part back and forth with a pry-bar.

i think the message here is go round and check all possible suspension/subframe/engine mount bolts ;)

haha! yup that was the plan - just wanted to see if anyone had a good place to start lol!! :P

if the wishbone bushes were loose then surely the car would squirm about? ;) and if the bottom mount was loose wouldnt i be able to rock the engine by hand? (pretty sure i did that up uber tight when the engine went in 2 weeks ago thou - remember lying in gearbox oil leaning off a breaker bar anyways :P)

If the bush is OK and its just the bolt thats loose then it can clonk but still drive acceptably.

Never say never Kate.

But as Matt says get the torque wrench out and make sure everything is ubber tight. It'll soon come clear/help reduce the possibles.

so far then its a short list of wishbones, sub frame, engine mounts, exhaust and every other nut/bolt in the engine bay... narrows it down :P

Yeah, i had this.

No symptons through the steering, nasty torque steer, just a clunk as you braked hard, or was aggresive with the clutch from the lights, as the wishbone shifted backwards and forwards along the bolts.
