mainline 2 1 Cars Posted September 9, 2007 have just changed the driveshaft and gearbox oil on a 1.6. was running fine, except the driveshaft before. when we put it together again, it won't idle properly without stalling, is very smoky and sounds rough, haven't even attempted to drive it away. the only thing i think it might be is that we removed the air flow meter and when we re-attached, the gasket got damaged. it is back on tight, but hasn't made any difference. is the problem likely to be the air flow meter, gasket, or something else? mainline 2 1 Cars Posted September 9, 2007 Its light grey smoke, and lots of it. My mate inadvertently started it without the airflow meter attached, which is when the problem started. Since then, I re-attached the airflow meter, which looks to be fine, without the gasket, but the problem is still the same. Very 'chuggy' and very smoky if the revs are built up at all. If the throttle isn't depressed about 1/4 of the way it just cuts out and dies. As I say, really strange as it was running fine literally three days earlier. Its a 92 phase 2 with 130k. I'd check all sensor contacts as almost all of them are on that side of the engine - engine temp. sensor connector (blue) , SAD choke connector (black) , AFM connector ... ignition leads etc. .. check all electrics , must be that you forget to plug in some of connectors or unplug one of them by accident cheers ! GLPoomobile 958 Posted September 9, 2007 Check that the flap inside the AFM moves freely and has plenty of spring tension in it. It should be fully closed when the engine is off. If it's jammed wide open it will over fuel and won't run. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
