Spiky 37 Posted September 9, 2007 ok i know it sounds stupid, but i have fitted two brand new shafts on the front of my car and when cornering hard on left hand bends, it like driving on a rumble strip my car currently has 309 shafts and wishbones so i think i have not been sold a 309 drive shaft on the drivers side, hence the knocking. so was going to fit my 205 wishbones, and was hoping you guys would say, that they wont fit, thus i can then prove i have the wrong shaft
craig f90 0 Posted September 9, 2007 (edited) Im certain that the 309 shaft and bones are longer. Folks obviously use a 309 set up for a wider track. Im sure that the 205 shaft is too short to get a nut on the end using 309 wish bones from what ive read, but if youve got it on it cant be seriously shorter, and the 309 shaft would be crushed up using 205 wishbones i'd imagine. Edp 67 3 Cars Posted September 9, 2007 Some people have done it had no problems. I'm not keen on the idea of losing a driveshaft at speed on a tight corner so i swapped both driveshafts and arms for 309 items. Far safer IMHO.
Spiky 37 Posted September 9, 2007 guys i dont think you read my post, or what i was getting at i bought new 309, not 205 wishbones and bought new 309 not 205 drive shafts BUT, and here were you need to read, i dont think i been sold a 309 shaft on my drivers side, so as a TEST,and NOT a permenant solution i wanted to know not a guess, that a 309 shaft and 205 wishbone wont go together, of course i know know it goes the other way and is not ideal, but thats not what i'm worried about and to add an update it is 100% the out cv joint knocking as i just listened to it slight rant but a friendly one ... jackherer 543 Posted September 9, 2007 I don't know because I have never tried to fit 205 bones with 309 shafts (and I doubt many people have TBH) but as an educated guess I would say that it would be impossible to get the wishbone ball joint into the hub due to the length of the shaft pushing it out further. Spiky 37 Posted September 9, 2007 ok, will try after lunch
newdean0 0 Posted September 18, 2007 I had exactly the same problem; a rumbling when cornering hard from the outside wheel. I just ended up swapping the outer end for another one I had lying around. I reckon it may have been some damage to the splined shaft which was stopping it from locating properly in the hub. Might be worth a check on yours.
Spiky 37 Posted September 18, 2007 well i tyhink i've sorted mine now due to a few issues, 1 being the angle of the engine, now thats been altered secondly it was a new shaft ( tin crap one) so took it back and they replaced it free of charge with a GKN one.. RESULT so i know have 2 brand new GKN's on the front. once i done a few more mods i'll know if it's ok again
