Don't forget any MI16 engine will need a rebuild as 99% of them have been miss-used over the years, Head's can corrode on the surface and under the surface even on the odd good one, I could go on but budget on about £1000.00 for a MI rebuild,

Cheapest option is the GTi6 lump

what sort results you get with that lump and how hard is it copmared to a mi-16?

It's a better engine in all area's, 86x86 so a nice square config, Better torque and 7bhp more in the 306/Xsara, The wiring is easy and a number of posts have been posted about this install.

Yes it's heavier but it is now the cheapest option is you just want to stick it in without a rebuild

While nothing is particularly difficult with the conversion, it is more involved than a straight engine swap. It may be worth removing the old engine yourself, getting the new one on its mounts and then find someone to help with the details.

And gti6 is definately a good move. I couldn't go that way as they are far too expensive here ($7k for the one engine i found!), but my mi16 rebuild got ugly thanks to corrosion in the head and liner seats.

hmm intrestiong so all in all the gti-6 is a better option?

does it use the same mounts as the mi-16?

While I can't argue with the advice you have been given it's sound.

I picked up a mi16 a little while ago that was ok. Becoming harder to find now but if you know what you are looking for they are still out there.

Avoid e bay unless it is local and you can insp it before buying.

Try local rags the free ads etc as you may find a local complete car to use as a donor.

I have found after 90k they are past their best, if left out of the car they are often trouble. So best bet is a runner you can peform some tests on before stripping.

Pay around £300 for a bx and £450 for a 405.

Try salvage sites for a 306 gti6 plenty come to grief.

Due to a change of plans and a business venture I have for sale a full GTI6\Xsara VTs Conversion.

I have a 78k mile xsara VTS engine and gearbox, all ancillaries, manifolds including exhaust down pipe, All mounts,

The ECU(still locked), Loom, All water hoses, accelerator cable, Plus calipers, with decent Disks and brand new pads.

The engine ran very sweetly but doesn't currently have a cam cover, and was from a rear ended vehicle. I would advertise it for sale, but I don't have enough posts. I'm looking for the first £450

I've bought two Mi16 engines now using a similar method to Taffycrook previously. I saved the search 405 / Bx 16v on Ebay within 75 miles & bought the last one which was a written off accident damaged 405 which I could still drive/test/listen to thoroughly before buying for £270. That way you can really listen for top or bottom end rattles & any smoke at all also look at the rest of the car too - Does it look cared for vs a rally driver wannabee......I also agreed to do a compression test on the engine before buying it which was taking the p... a bit but he was desperate to get rid so let me away with it.....

The conversion is very satisfying but still a lot of work so worth taking time to find a good 'un I say!!
