Advice Please On Uprated Alternator

Recommended Posts

Guest Red Man

Hi guys, some advice please if possible.

I am running a 205 1.6GTi (with 1.9 engine) as a road rally car. In the past I have had 2 alternators fail - once of which was in a rally. The car has had a new alternator for 12 months now with no problems, but I have just fitted 100w spots, and would like to be sure the alternator won't fail again. A couple of questions then:

1) What is the standard amp rating for the GTi alternator?

2) And what is the highest rating alternator that people have been able to fit - with a source would be good. Trust me I do not want another failure, so would be happy to buy new if necessary

any help much appreciated

Dave

standard alternators fitted to the gti are 55 or 70 amp. you maybe able to get a higher amperage alternator to fit from an 405 or similar. have a look for a car with accesories like aircon etc. these tend to run a much beefier alternator to deal with the loads involved.

Miles

The Mi16's run a 80amp alt and will fit, you just won;t use the 4th groove for the belt
