pj838 0 Posted September 5, 2007 I am in the middle of changing the cambelt on my 6 engine, hit a problem.. (posted this on the 6 forum but I know a lot of people have the engine here too) I am swapping the old 136 belt and tensioner, and putting on a new 137 belt with the 'updated tensioner' in the kit. Problem is I can't get the tensioner to stay tensioned, When I tension the belt by turning the allen key clockwise so the pointer is in the slot, then tighten the tensioner bolt, undo all the locking pins etc and crank the engine, the pointer still moves all over. The pointer can even be pushed with one finger to change the belt tension, and does not appear to be 'connected' to the allen key adjuster..??? Can anyone help as I must be doing something wrong, possibly because changing from an old tensioner to a new? I put a long bolt through the centre hole of the tensioner into the block, and a smaller bolt through the tensioner 'fork' into the block to keep it in place. welshpug 1,657 Posted September 5, 2007 IIRC the auto adjuster sits on a stud not the bolt, so the bolt may not be holding it sufficiently. why are you usign this type of adjuster? the earlier type is more reliable being a simple bearing with and offset mounting hole. pj838 0 Posted September 6, 2007 Thanks, I will have a look at it, I think there is a slot on the back of the tensioner centre part, amybe it locks on this. Or might have to buy a specific stud for it. The advice I got off the 6 forum was to get the 137 tooth belt, which then must have this type of tensioner. Your right though the old one looks way easier to do
woodsy 0 Posted September 6, 2007 hi mate, i aint been on here for while. The tensioner is like many vauxhaull type ones.Basically you set the pointer by turning allen key which you done right. Then turn engine over by hand 2 turns and make sure timing marks line up again and the tensioner pointer should be in the same position when you set it.You will be able to move the pointer by hand as when enigne is running it moves anyway to keep the belt tight.I know its daft design but do cambelts all the time in work as i got a garage.Hope it helps.
