Gear Box Crunch

Recommended Posts

john-melbourne

Hi,

I dont know if this is in the right section as i dont know if its an XU, so thats my first question i have a 1988 1.9 gti is that the XU engine?

The car that i have just bought appears to have the deadly crunch going into 3rd gear, this is not all the time just when accelrating very sharply (which the last owner kindley showed me on a quiet country road) :P if the are driving normally or a little faster than normal then there is no crunch at all, is there another explanation for this other than a re-con box? How much should i be looking at paying for a re-con or has anyone had a price to have there box re coned before?

On the off chance, does anyone know any good places around manchester that could help me with my gear box problem?

Thanks

John

A 1.9 is an XU9JA engine (1.6 is XU5JA) so yes its an XU as are all GTIS and Mi16s.

It sounds like you do need a new gearbox (or a recon). You can get good second hand ones for 40-50 or if you want to get yours rebuilt talk to Miles on here.

How long do they usually last after the crunching has started?

My mate drove his 205 GTI with a crunching 2nd and 3rd for months and months, he only changed it in the end because it got annoying, not due to total failure.

As Jackherer says, they'll go on nearly for ever crunching. The synchro cone clutches are made of soft alloy and will wear badly under abuse or if the wrong oil is used.

Whilst waiting for a replacement 'box to come up, learn how to double-declutch ;)

What oil do you recomend for a BE-3?

look out for a be3 1.6 GTi gearbox - makes better use of the power of the 1.9 - also while your at it, see if you can get hold of a 1.6 flywheel as these are lighter :)

Total BV for preference or any 75W/80 oil specifically for Cit/Pug 'boxes. Comma do an adequate one.

Take care not to use too thick oil. The gearchage in the cold will be very difficult and you risk synchro damage.
