Blish10 0 Posted August 28, 2007 Hi guys I searched scrubbing and rubbing but to no avail Anyway, whenever i go round a right hander, my ns strut seems to make a scrubbing noise. A mate reckons a collapsed spring or something. Have had a breif look but cannot see anything wrong. Small gap between bottom end of spring and strut, but that is same on OS so I cant fathom whats wrong Any help greatly appreciated Cheers Blish
johnnyboy666 195 1 Cars Posted August 28, 2007 i have the same problem, the tyre scrubs on the arch on the front but only on the one side, im not entirely sure why but i have a feeling that it could be a knackered damper, or the adjusting mechanism as mine are adjustable but the one that scrubs wont go any stiffer regardless of adjustments. it only affects my car when theres 4 or more people in it though so i havent bothered taking then strut out to check, but if yours does it constantly it might be worth having a closer look. on the other hand it could be your rear beam? worth doing a search to find all the symptoms
Blish10 0 Posted August 29, 2007 Sorry i should have mentioned its a 1.6 standard setup but with 1.9 wheels. Its definately front corner rather than beam. Apparently, you can feel it in the passenger footwell
Blish10 0 Posted August 29, 2007 And it got progressively worse on the way to work this morn...
Peetypug 5 Posted August 29, 2007 (edited) what size tires are they? can you see where its scrubbing? take the wheel off if you get chance and have a quick look to see if anything is out of the ordinary have you checked your brakes? Blish10 0 Posted August 29, 2007 Tyres are 195/50 R15 82V Cannot see where it's scrubbing. Took wheel off, had a look and (what i think is the) CV boot has come off and you can see bearings. Would that cause this sort of noise do you think? Bit of grit getting in there? Small amount of play if i wobble brake disc, but its the same on OS too. Another thing is that the disc spins on hub and bolt holes then dont line up (NS) but this is not the case on OS. Brakes seem ok. Nothing out of the ordinary. Still stumped, please help?!? Cheers Blish
Peetypug 5 Posted August 30, 2007 i would say your cv joint is knackered, is there much crap in it? theres probably no grease left and what there is will be full of grit are the bearings loose/missing? if so you defo need a new shaft, in fact if it was me i would swap it just as a precaution. if you take it off and buy a reconditioned one from a motor factors its about £45 and yours to get it. or ask on here and you may get one for half that dont worry about the disk spinning, there should be a screw that holds it in place but if it aint there your wheel bolts hold it in place anyway. niether of mine have the screws and i bet theres a lot of others on here in the same situation
Blish10 0 Posted August 30, 2007 Cant see much sh*t but there is no grease whatsoever. Bearings seem ok from what I can tell. Went to Pug today to ask for a price on just the boot and they want £40!!! I think im gonna try and get a cheap boot just to try to start with and if that doesnt cure it, then a shaft. I have only driven 3 days with the noise. Anyone know where boots can be had cheaply?? Thanks for your help Pete Blish
johnnyboy666 195 1 Cars Posted August 30, 2007 ah i misunderstood your situation, i thought you meant the tyre was scrubbing the arch, i would definately get that boot sorted asap before it knackers the shaft
Blish10 0 Posted August 30, 2007 Any idea on where to get cheapys Johnny?
johnnyboy666 195 1 Cars Posted August 30, 2007 last time i got mine done it was at the local garage and it cost me about £38, spose it depends on which garage you go to really
Blish10 0 Posted August 30, 2007 Seems a lot, if reconditioned driveshafts can be had for £45. Does anyone know of any sort of generic one that can go on??
Peetypug 5 Posted August 30, 2007 as far as i know it has to be the correct one for the car look in the yellow pages for motor factors and give them a bell
johnnyboy666 195 1 Cars Posted August 30, 2007 ive read a post on here somewhere about temporary stretchy boot things but i cant remember where they came from or what price
Peetypug 5 Posted August 30, 2007 (edited) they are about £10 IIRC i dont rate them as they are only glued together and it aint the most spacious of places to fit one in a 205 wheel arch somebody will probably say otherwise though, its down to wether you want do a proper job or not Edited August 30, 2007 by sorrentopete
Blish10 0 Posted August 30, 2007 OK, I'll get a proper one. Cheers guys Blish
