Afm Re-track / Ignition Control Unit

Recommended Posts

Phil205

Hi,

Help needed :-

1) How do you re-track an AFM ? I guess that this has been well covered before. Could someone please give me a link to a good article or advise how this is done.

2) The Haynes manual refers to the "Ignition Control Unit" (see Fuel injection system - complete test - page 95). Where is the Ignition Control Unit located ? Is this the ECU ?

Thanks,

Phil.

P.S. Has anyone ever had work done on a 205 GTI in Dublin (Ireland) ?

What is your problem that you think a retrack will resolve?

Before you even think about trying to retrack an AFM, test it first like this:

If the voltmeter is "jumpy" and erratic then try cleaning the carbon track very carefully with a little gentle solvent and try the test again.

If after all that, it is still jumpy, a retrack is in order. Retrack as a last resort though.

A thread here shows how:

The ignition control unit you speak of will be the igntion amplifier. It is not in the ECU. All the ECU does is control fuelling. The ignition amplifier is a small flat lump of electronics on a heatsink mounted on the offside inner wing and having a 7 pin connector on it. They're pretty reliable and usually cause misfires when they are dying. They're a standard item and easily and cheaply replaced if you have doubts about it's health.
