jtek 0 Posted August 23, 2007 i have a BE1 box on my 1.6, and although it generally engages reverse ok, there is a knocking and banging noise when i reverse sometimes, occasionally fairly loud, this isn't an issue in forward gears, only when going backwards. any ideas? sorry i can't be more specific with noises, my best guess was engine mounts or strut tops or a buggered diff. Richie-Van-GTi 74 2 Cars Posted August 23, 2007 could be engine mounts or suspension components, start by getting the car on stands and having a good tug at everything, check for any excessive play, also check the downpipe isnt hitting something when the engine is rocked. If you cant find any nasty play then it may possibly be the gearbox, with it still on stands have a friend hold the clutch in with it in reverse and spin the wheels backwards, see if you can feel any nasty knocks as i turns. Always hard to diagnose over the net.
