XU has a 30 degree angle towards back of the car, inlet is at the front, exhaust at the back.

205 & 309 GTI, 405 Mi16, 306 S16 & GTI6 etc, as well as diesels - are XU engined.

for instance, XU9J4 is a code for a 405 Mi16 1.9 engine.

TU is physically smaller, sits upright and is turned around the other way.

205 & 309 basic models, XS, Rallye, 106 GTI & Rallye etc - are TU engined.

for instance, TU5J4 is a code for a 106 GTI 1.6 engine.

there are alloy blocks with wet liners and steel blocks in both engine types (iirc).

both XU and TU engines have gearbox on the left (your passenger's) side btw.

hope this anwers your questions.

Grim.Badger

Don't mean to nit-pick but the XU diesel engines have the inlet and exhaust manifolds at the rear of the engine
