Piston Protrusion On The 1.9gti And 1.8 16v

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if there is any difference in piston protrusion between the XU9JA and XU7j4p engines? Basically I wan't to know what HG I will need if I either put an XU9JA head on an XU7j4p bottom end or if I put the pistons and crank from the XU7 into an XU9 block.

Cheers :)

cant find the specs for the 205 engine but should be on here somewhere. Heres the info for the xu7j4p

standard protrusion 0.03-0.1 mm, max olerance between protrusion is 0.05 mm. Pistons and liners in 3 sizes as are 205 pistons etc.

A =83 to 83.010 mm

B =83.0101 to 83.020 mm

C =83.020 to 83.030

Hope that helps :)

The Xu9JA liner protrusion data from Haynes is 0.08 - 0.15mm (without seal). The liner bores (A, B, C) are the same as above.

Don't they both use the same head gasket as standard anyway?

All 83mm bore XU's do (XU5, 7 & 9) but the pistons on the XU5/9 don't protrude from the bore afaik.

Graham.

The 1.8 and 1.9 engines do on the ZX according to GSF, but I'm not sure if there is a difference between the 8v block and the 16v block.

Can someone with a parts CD check the 306 1.8 16v and 8v head gasket part number please?

Internally I very much doubt it, it'll be like the 1.9 Mi & 8v only difference is the second tensioner externally but all the same water & oil ways inside.

Peugeot are bound to list seperate head gaskets for each engine variant even though there is very little (if any) difference between them. Neat only list one gasket for the 1.8 engine.

I'm sure the last head gasket I fitted (Payne iirc) listed all 1.6, 1.8 & 1.9 engines on th applications list. :lol:

Sandy has done a bit of work to these engine's so maybe he could confirm if there is any actual difference between head gaskets or not.

I noticed something in the data for the gaskets, the repair gaskets (i.e gaskets for skimmed heads) are 1.5 for the XU7, and 1.45 for the XU10 (both 8 and 16V), seeing as the 16v heads are very similar between the XU7 and 10 I'd hazard a good guess that XU7 piston protrusion would be within 0.05 of the XU10.

also had a read of my 405 haynes manual, no piston protrusion mentioned anywhere, though there is a mention of LINER protrusion for all alloy blocks being 0.03 to 0.10mm, with a max difference of 0.05mm between liners for 8v engines and 0.02 for 16v engines.

I just wondered if the block height was different rather than the actual oilways etc

Cheers fo the info :lol:
