Scoping The Dwell

Recommended Posts

A friend is bringing home a bosch diagnostic machine from work later today, its a large hand held thing that plugs into most cars. Anyway it has a scope on it so we are hoping to meqasure the dwell on my coil's. Hoping someone can tell me what this entails? Is it a case of connect it to the live feed, switch the coil power on a measure how long it takes to charge, IE look at the current drawn and how long it takes? Or do I connect it with the engine running and check there etc. I need to find my cranking dwell an running dwell. Do the 2 connectors for the scope go in line or will it be one on the live and one on the earth?

Add a resistor of about 0.5-0.2 ohms (high wattage one) in series with the +feed and meashure over that. When coil is saturated the voltage drop over the resistor will drop significantly.
