Crankcase Breather Hose, Could It Leak Oil?

Recommended Posts

Bonzai

you know the hose that goes from the oil filler neck to the bottom of the block, i have an oil leak in this area. Ive removed and refitted the sump twice this week believeing the seal was at fault, but as the leak appeared from the exact same place both times ive refitted it, im coming to the conclusion that its something else, my first suspect is the breather hose as its directly above.

My logic says as its a breather it wouldnt have any pressure or oil level in it when running, but im no expert so i put it to you guys....

Cheers :)

yes it can leak, as its a breather it does have oil running through it and breather hoses are more prone to cracking that normal oil hoses I have found.

Some oil will travel through it. It's prone to cracking when hardened. I topped up the oil in my Goodwood once, only to discover it had all pee'd out of said pipe onto the block/floor! Shortly before I ripped the 8v out!

That one is prone to going for some reason along with the oil filler pipe, Odd as the cam cover one always seem's good.

Hi !

Same here , yes it can leak oil (but you can check if the clip on the pipe to block joint is still tight enough , try to tight some more and see if this stops leaking also you can apply a little bit of sealant on inside and outside surface of the pipe on the bottom part where it goes/clips to block , if the hose isn't heavy split/broken somewhere else..) I've replace this hose three times now because of that bloody leaking :) but spare ones as this breather hose is too f*****g expensive  for one piece of rubber , so i always go to breakers when i need spare one ...

Cheers ! :)

Thanks guys. Ive gone ahead and ordered a new hose. I cant be bothered to check if it is the cause, because ive spent more time under the car the last 7 days than i have in the rest of my 205 ownership. I assume once the engine has cooled down, there will be as good as no oil content in this hose? hopefully making changing it not a messy job?
