kanyeost 0 Posted August 19, 2007 Hi. Does anyone have any experience of GSF's 205 GTI rear dampers? (the 25 quid ones). Do they give a similar feel to the OE shcoks or do I really need to go see Peugeot? Thanks.
Alastairh 47 Posted August 19, 2007 They the bilstein streetline black "OE" spec ones? If so, don't bother. They're soft as anything. Worth going for some genuine ones! Alastair
pug309twin40s 1 Posted August 19, 2007 be careful with the GSF rear dampers as i brought some last month and they were crap, only good for base models, you could easily push the shock in and out with your hands. i sent them back and got refund.
Ryan 99 Posted August 20, 2007 Has anyone tried the KYB dampers from Buy-Parts-By? Either the Premium (OE spec) or Excel G (fast-road).
Butler 0 Posted August 20, 2007 Do they do 309 ones? You could try them, they maybe stiffer.
pug309twin40s 1 Posted August 20, 2007 Do they do 309 ones? You could try them, they maybe stiffer. 309 ones are just as bad from GSF as thats what i brought the shocks for my goodwood. Front shocks were Record items. rears cant remember what make they were.
kanyeost 0 Posted August 20, 2007 Peugeot it is then, they aren't as expensive as I thought they'd be at £33 each.
jonnie205 1 Posted August 20, 2007 pug wont supply you with oe ones for £33, i would just fit good used 1.9 gti ones, by far the best
Chris H 10 Posted August 20, 2007 I've used the o.e. KYB stuff on my scooby and was really happy with them for the price, also their uprated adjustable shocks get very good reports for scoobies too. I'm planning on getting some of the KYB adustables for my 306 s16 and i'll see how they go!
kanyeost 0 Posted August 20, 2007 (edited) pug wont supply you with oe ones for £33, i would just fit good used 1.9 gti ones, by far the best I didn't think so either but the bloke was adament he'd got the price right, I made him check twice, 1.6 & 1.9. Is there anyway of checking their the right ones and not base model jobbies when I go to pick them up? Edited August 20, 2007 by kanyeost
welshpug 1,657 Posted August 20, 2007 (edited) pug wont supply you with oe ones for £33 why not? RR SHOCK-ABSORB 5206 L3 - EXCEPT XU9JA 5206 K6 - XU9JA 5206 K4 - XU9J1 AND BVM AND GENTRY UNTIL DATE 1993 01 03 5206 96 - XU9J1 AND BVM AND GENTRY SINCE DATE 1993 01 04 all of the above are quoted as £33.16 each plus vat. if they have any of the above part numbers they'll be fine, (all above are P2, 91 on part numbers, most of which have succeded the older pre 91 part numbers in the database where applicable) ideally you want 5206 L3, L4 or K6, the rest are for van or lower spec models Edited August 20, 2007 by welshpug
kanyeost 0 Posted August 20, 2007 Yeah I just checked at another Peugeot place and they are 33 quid before VAT, 38 quid including for both 1.6 & 1.9. Incidentally whats the difference between 1.9 & 1.6 damper? 1.9 are presumably better but are they a straight swap with the 1.6 ones, (I am going to be using them on a hybrid beam (diesel cross member and trailing arms, GTI torsion bars & ARB)). welshpug 1,657 Posted August 20, 2007 the cross member is the same nowadays, there used to be a difference in the diameter of the centre section on earlier base models, but that doesnt affect compatability. I'd guess that damper rates would be different for 1.9 specific units, seeing as the 1.9 always "feels" more planted. I just remembered that van models use a 21mm T/B so the Dampers may be suitable after all, what I have noticed in the construction of the dampers between stock and GTi units is the diameter of the damper body, they are much larger. jackherer 543 Posted August 20, 2007 Has anyone tried the KYB dampers from Buy-Parts-By? Either the Premium (OE spec) or Excel G (fast-road). I've used a full set of gold coloured KYBs on a 205 GTI with SBC springs. I don't think they are either of the two you mention but I don't remember the exact model. They were very good though, I was more than pleased with them although the ride was slightly harsh but still fine for a daily driver.

I know a lot of jap car owners rate KYB quite highly, but that was mainly the uprated or adjustables. I was more interested in the OE replacements. But if OEM dampers are so cheap then it doesn't matter anymore.
