Which Starter Motor Will Fit On A 1.9 205 Gti?

Recommended Posts

Guest andrews_45

Hi Chaps, I have searched the forum but cannot find the info I require...

I have a 1.9GTI with a BE1 gearbox. On friday when I tried to start the car I heard a horrible grinding noise coming from the starter prior to starting up. :) Well yesterday it did it again and then started smelling like a burning smell. Upon lifting the bonnet and investigating, when trying to start smoke comes from the starter and it doesnt work  . I can hear the solenoid clicking, so I can only assume the starter is kaput. It sounds to me like the bearings have collapsed and now the brushes have burnt out?

I have seen on some posts while searching that people have been reccomended to use a xu7 or xu10 starter off a 306/406, will these fit my BE1 box do you know? I am going to have a look at the local scrappy tomorrow, so does anybody know which other starters I can use?

Many thanks...

yes, any starter from an xu engine, be it diesel, 8 valve or 16 valve will fit. :(

From that line-up i would go for a diesel starter, they run nearly double the compression of a petrol so it will never be over stressed, apart from that, pick a scrap yard, any scrap yard and the odds are there will be a selection of berlingo/partner/dispatch/relay/expert vans that all use the XU diesel.

Find any 205, 306, 309, 405 or 406(or ZX, with petrol engine of 1.6l or above or a diesel engine in & the starter should fit. Have a look for the location of the starter on your car & any Pug (or Citroen) with in it in the same place is most likely an XU engine.

Graham.

Thanks for offer Sam, I didnt read it until too late.

Thanks for help chaps, I managed to get a diesel starter from the scrappys for £15. It works a treat, but I had a complete nightmare trying to get my car to idle. A quick search of the forum lead me to a loose bolt on the plenum chamber, which holds the oil filler. Tightened up and now works fine........for now at least ;-).

Your welcome!

There is so much that has to be moved around when replacing the starter (doing it properly!) that it's very easy to forget to tighten something up! Glad it's sorted now though

Dont worry I did the same !! couldnt work out for ages why my car just didnt want to idle properly once i had done the starter motor. Had an MOT done at work and our tester said he had good and bad news, sorted my idle out but the water pump had failed and was pooring water everywhere!

Got carbs fitted now they are much better. (easier to fit a new starter aswell!)

My car suffers from poor idle (when cold, but ok when fully warmed up - about 30 minutes).

The pipe to the oil filler cap on my 1.6 (XU5JA) is fairly loose. Should this pipe be locked in my position ? Could this be contributing ?

How do I locate the plenum chamber and the bolt (that should hold the oil filler) ?

Thanks,

Phil

The bolt is on the right hand side of the inlet manifold as you look at it. Its a short stubby one that holds the filler cap in place. Just have a look around, it's not that hard to find!
