Best Way Of Stripping Away Rust And Paint Etc

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be dismantling my 205 soon to cut out all the rust and get it welded back together agin, but what is the best way of getting rid of the rust?

I though an angle grinder to get rid of the worst, then sand paper or emery paper followed by liberal amounts of zinc based primer, then paint then a waxy/tarry undercoat to protect the underside of any body work; does this sound right? have I got it all in the right order? Is an angle grinder suitable?

Cheers

Yeah I was going to say they look like 3M scotchbrite(maybe a little rougher that SB) pads? We use something very similar @ work for polishing tools/stainless/removing burrs etc. They screw into an attachment that fits normal angle ginders etc. and as Henry says they are really good.

A normal grinder disk/pad may have a tendancy to 'bite' into precious body work if you're not carefull (not saying you wont be:)

These are the ones we have.

3M's version are called clean & strip discs. Much more heavy duty that Scotchbrite
