Wishbone Bolts/nuts - How Tight?

Recommended Posts

Guest MiamiBlueOli

car just failed MOT on the inner wishbone (excessive play) although I replaced both of the wishbones fairly recently. I cleaned off the muck and had a look and the bushes still appear to be in perfect condition.

The nut/bolt on the front (smaller) one was not particularly tight.

Could this be causing the play? If so, how tight should I do it up?

I know that I have to do this with the wheels in the normal position.

Many thanks for any help you can give me

Oli

Yes done all the wiggling neccessary, it's definately not the hub it is the inner bushes that are allowing the movement, but thanks for the advice.

torn bushes arent that easy to spot by wiggling. get a pry bar or bfo screwdriver between the subframe and wishbone and you'll soon find the culprit. there usually isnt that much play with a slightly loose bolt (if its the right bolt)

I tightened up the nut and bolt and the play dissapeared. Took it back today and it passed.

Saved myself some money there because initially I though I was going to need a new wishbone or bush.

You would have thought the MOT tester would have done that for you! Mine did :)
