Another Driveshaft Thread (sorry)

Hey,

 

Picked up my new 205 this weekend. Been washing it and going over it today and found a small problem. The drivers side outer cv boot has completly split and is only held together by a small thread of rubber, i'm not sure how long its bean like this but there is no grease at all inside.

 

The car does not make any knocks or bangs when turning which is strange.

 

I've read its not worth just refitting a new boot so I'm going to replace the full driveshaft this weekend. I'm having trouble choosing which make driveshaft to buy. I've done a search and seen some horror story threads about GSF £27 shafts breaking after 2 months. What are the GKN £52 ones they sell like?

 

Any recommendations/experiences?

 

If i do the driver side, should i do the passenger side at the same time or is it ok just to do the single side?

If it doesn;t make any odd sounds then repack with grease normally supplied with a boot kit which is fine and you may as well get some more use out of the shaft, But if you do buy a new one then it's the GKN ones without a doubt, I;ve never tried the cheap one's, Maybe OK if your just selling the car and no more

I've had no trouble at al with the shafts from GSF, been on for 10k.

 

no need to replace both if its only on you have an issue with, but check it just in case.

I'd say it all comes down to how you drive. Most driveshafts shouls last providing you drive reasonably sensible. People usually bugger shafts due to driving hard all the time. As with most car components, the harder the use the shorter the life.

I have one more question, Why are both sides the same price, even though thr drivers side is longer?

because it doesnt cost any more to produce, but then that does still leave a fiver's worth of intermediate bearing to account for on one side, hmm interesting!

 

 

£190.04 from the dealer for a brand new shaft of either variety!

My GF has a 306 1.6 8v (1997 pre-facelit model without ABS), and it's making a strange noise which i think maybe a drive shaft. When under load there is a sort of "grinding" noise comming from the engine, You cant hear it outside the car when it drives past, only in the cabin. It only makes this noise when under "heavy load" and not when cruising (i.e motorway speeds)

 

Could this be a driveshaft? Wheel bearing? CV Joint?

 

Does not make any horrible clunks when turning on full lock so maybe this rules out CV joints?

 

Also if you use plenty of clutch when pulling away it wont make the noise.

 

I've got under the car and the passenger side drive shaft has some slight movement (about 5mm) in a longitudenal direction (pulling from hub end - pushing into gear box), should there be this movement?

 

If cruising along and blip the throttle, the gear stick moves a searios amount, and the exhaust bangs under the car, i have changed the engine mounts but the noise/problem still exists.

 

Any ideas?

As Miles says if there's no major clicking under load on lock then re-pack it with Molybdenum grease and fit a new boot, with a little luck it's done no damage. I'd certainly do that before buying new. :)

The movement will be normal but only between the 2 CV joints, there shouldn't be any between hub or gearbox tho.

 

Sounds like the engine mounts may be a little worn, get someone to look at the engine with the bonnet up while you gently rock the car forward and/or backward in gear with the clutch, with the handbrake on to see if there's excessive movement and where it's coming from. :)
