Gearshift Confusion?

Recommended Posts

sussex_gti

My 1.9gti had an engine and box swap not long before i bought it. The problem i have is the car originally had a lift up and foward reverse gearbox. when the engine swap was done, it was then changed for the later style box, with reverse being right and down. The problem is the gearstick wasnt changed, and the lift purely held up with a cable tie. im guessing both types of box have the reverse cable, and on the later box' it is just permanantly held up?

sorry if im confusing people, just dont want to run into troubles when ordering my quickshift from constella.

dont worry about it, the lift up part is just attached to a cable that went into the old gearbox and wont effect any part of the new boxes operation. No idea why they have tied it up as its not required. I just removed the cable fom mine and left it as it was. :)

When I changed gearboxes I left the cable in place (but not fitted to the gearbox) in case I ever refit a gearbox that needs it but as already said its not doing anything so you can just remove it if you want. Even if you had a gearbox that needed it if you removed it you'd still be able to get it in reverse, its the presence of the cable that locks reverse out.

Disconnect it from the gearbox then! When the gearstick is let down a block of metal is dropped into the gearbox to lock out reverse, from what you say it seems it locks out all gears on later gearboxes...

Ok, thanks for the help. Now the Quickshift can be ordered.

I forgot to mention, on the later gearboxes there is a plastic breather that screws in where the lift up cable goes. You'll need one of these or you'll probably get gearbox oil all over the place. Should only be a few £££ at peugeot (yeah right ^_^ )

As Jackherer has said the breather is where the reverse cable went on the early BE1 box's, This must be fitted or the box cannot breath

The gearstick, is easy, Just get a late model (Any 205) gearstick plastic shroud and nob, I'd say most scrappy's should have them.
