Does it have this problem following fitting the 16v lump? Some 205s have the wires for the starter and ignition switched live swapped over on the two brown multiplugs under the dash...

Its pin 6 of the smaller plug and pin 9 of the larger plug that need to be swapped.

had the wiring done by 205parts. they've wired in the S16 loom etc.

is that all that needs to be done then? just swap the 2 wires over?

It certainly sounds like this is the problem you've got so yes, its just those two wires that need to be swapped. Did 205parts wire the loom into the car or did they just give you a loom to plug in yourself?

If they haven't seen your car then its almost certainly those two wires swapped over, IMO the best thing to do is unclip the two brown plugs on the car loom and swap those two pins over to make your car compatible with the vast majority of other 205s.

The only explanation for them being different on some cars that I've been able to come up with is that someone at Peugeot was taking the piss <_<

The starter is 46 (should be blue but cant count on it) and the switched ignition 12v is 2 (should be red, also has a smaller wire on the same pin, usually yellow and IIRC 32a?)

yep, exactly as I had on my 89 car, small yellow and fat red on the end of the 9 pin plug, easy to swap though, just lift the flap on the side and pull the pin out carefully.
