Peetypug 5 Posted August 8, 2007 today i thought i would have a crack at stripping my bottom end (1st time i've ever done one and defo the last) all was going well until i dropped a piston and liner on initial inspection it looked ok so i set it to one side i pulled the other 2 out and went to check them all properly thats when i saw the bloody hairline crack in one (yep the one i dropped) do i have to replace all 4 or can i get away with just the one how much are they? is there anything else appart from the bearings that i have to have replaced or checked over before i rebuild it? any help will be greatfully recieved
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted August 8, 2007 id always replace them as a set just to be sure, you may also need to put new rings in to bed into the new liners but if your rings are good its often worth the risk of trying them out first. I have a set of mint liners in the garage but postage would be an issue in case of them getting bashed about. They could maybe do with quick polish though to remove surface rust on the bores, they have been stood for a year. Also not sure if they have to be matched? I seem to recall my pistons being marked with a 'B', dont know if this matters with liners.
Peetypug 5 Posted August 8, 2007 the reason for stripping the whole engine is to replace anything that could be worn (rings, bearings) just pis*ed off with myself for dropping one as they are imaculate otherwise gona take everything to an engineering place to get everything checked, skimmed and the new/used liners honed how much would you want for them? jim21070 2 Posted August 8, 2007 Gutted. I feel for you, I've done things very similar You should be able to get away with just replacing the cracked liner Pete. The main thing is to have a matched liner and piston. Pug/Cit sell them individually but as a matched liner and piston set. There seems, on the face of it, no problem in doing it this way. I really hope this has a happy resolution.
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted August 8, 2007 Id be open to offers as I no longer have any wet lined engines. But reading above not sure if that means you needing matched piston? I thought it was just rings matched to the liner.
jim21070 2 Posted August 8, 2007 (edited) That's right Pete, Strictly speaking, you need a matched liner and piston. They are, as far as I can determine, matched up at production time and spend their lives together. That is how PSA supply them as spare parts. I was hoping to tell you how much a new liner/piston set would be but they're NFP However, having said that, a good liner and a selection of pistons could be matched using typical figures to work out piston to liner clearances and you'd be OK I think. James_m 0 Posted August 8, 2007 IIRC, the liner and piston will be stamped A,B or C, As long they are matched, all is well. Think i learned this from haynes So should be pretty easy finding a decent used liner with all the discarded 8v's lying around these days....
Peetypug 5 Posted August 8, 2007 (edited) so for example, if my pistons are stamped A, all i need to do is find a liner stamped A? or a matched piston and liner stamped A? or how about a different bottom end? i may have access to a 70.000 mile engine (if i can get it off my mate) Edited August 8, 2007 by sorrentopete
Peetypug 5 Posted August 9, 2007 just checked my pistons they are all marked with a B but i cant see any markings of any kind on my liners
Peetypug 5 Posted August 9, 2007 been to 4 scrap yards in the area with no luck which other peugeots/s*itroens use the same pistons/liners i know the 405 sri and i think the Bx gti any others anybody? please help
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted August 9, 2007 mine are definatley B's if you want to give them a try. Can weigh them today to check for postage if you want.
Peetypug 5 Posted August 9, 2007 how much do you want for them? im gona ring a few breakers and get a price for a piton and liner as well
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted August 9, 2007 make me an offer, as I said. they are pretty useless to me now
brianthemagical 1 Posted August 9, 2007 i used the pistons of one engine and liners of another, not sure why, but they were both 'b' and have done 1800 trouble free miles since the rebuild.
