Sandy 191 Posted August 8, 2007 VF37ERFVW etc 306 station wagon, auto trans, DOHC motor. Can anyone tell me what engine it is, or point me in the direction of a VIN decoder? If it's DOHC, it's either 1.8 16v (XU7J4) or 2.0 16v (XU10J4R). Unless you have anything later over there. The XU7 has an alloy engine block and the XU10 is black painted cast iron block. On the gearbox end of the head it'll say XU7 or XU10.
V8Pete 0 Posted August 8, 2007 Hmmm Pretty sure it's XU10 then. It's a 2000 model year - reckon it's worth a look for a 205 repower? Is the 133 hp output on Wikipedia for XU10J4R likely correct?
Sandy 191 Posted August 8, 2007 They're about that yes. It's a pretty good engine, GTi6 bits will fit.
welshpug 1,657 Posted August 8, 2007 its definitely the RFV engine, staring you right in the face funny thing about PSA vin's XU10J4R (RFV) 1995 - 2001 132 @ 5500 rpm most commonly reffered to as the Phase 2 306 XSi engine, was used in the 406 as well. snillet 1 Posted August 8, 2007 The XU7:s with 16V heads i´ve seen here (in ZX:es) has cast iron block, just as a pointer. My own 8V XU7 though (ZX break 1995) has alloy block. Should be the same engines in 306.
Sandy 191 Posted August 8, 2007 I have to say, I've never seen an Iron block XU7 and there's nothing in the parts/technical info to suggest they exist.
Emmy Seize 8 Posted August 9, 2007 (edited) I have to say, I've never seen an Iron block XU7 and there's nothing in the parts/technical info to suggest they exist. And that´s because iron block versions do not exist. The XU7 were chosen for 206 WRC and 307 WRC due to their weight advantages (for not being cast iron). welshpug 1,657 Posted August 9, 2007 205 T16 was XU7, and I'm sure that was iron block? may be wrong, but it was based on the 305 GT's 8v engine.
Sandy 191 Posted August 9, 2007 All the 205 T16 engines I've see pictures of were alloy block. The 305 XU's were all alloy block. The only Iron XU7 i'm aware of is the diesel.

We were looking for a decent ZX break a couple of years ago, and looked at both 8 valve XU7 and 16 valve XU7 versions (different model-years) and all the 16 valved cars had cast iron block. But the 8 valved had alloy blocks. I was a bit surprised at that myself since i thought the XU7:s were alloys.
