Priming The Inside Of My Shell

Recommended Posts

chrisj21

Hi all, Just wanted a bit of advice about using primer on the inside of the shell.i have a few areas that are starting to rust inside and im getting the shell ready for a respray.the inside will remain bare so will be sprayed aswell but i want to do most of the prep inside myself to save on cost.question is.do i sand back rite to bare metal and is it ok to primer over exsiting paint that will be around the the edge of where ive sanded, also what grade sand paper will be best to use? im very new to bodywork so just want to get it rite first time.

also under the rear seats which ive removed there are two or three big blobs of what look like seem sealer or something. which are painted over.can i get rid of these or do they serve a purpose?

thanks in advance and sorry for the stupid questions.

i found stripping the interior out, rubbing it down with some medium sand paper (paying particular attention to rust spots) and a healthy layer of hammerite was all i needed... it soon gets scuffed up and scratched anyways :)

As for the round bits behind the seats - these usualy go rusty and fall out... if they havnt yet then they will do soon ^_^;)

Just use some sort of zinc based primer (will say so on tin) over any bare bits of metal and that should help stop corrosion in the future.

Theres one called acid etch primer and halfords also do their own brand zinc primer.

As said above get rid of the rust then spray the bare metal with etch, then if it was me i would primer then top coat it, you dont need to go mad with the primer just get a good coat on the bit you etched and any thin areas.
