Fuel Lines, Filters And Banjos

Recommended Posts

GLPoomobile

Over the last couple of years I've read lots of topics about people with Mis suffering fuel leaks due to the difference in bore size between the original 8v filter and fuel hose to the fuel rail, and topics about relocating the filer. Since getting my Mi I've revisited many of these topics.

The problem is I just don't get a lot of it! :) Particularly banjos. I mean, what the hell are banjos? I know they are a type of fixing, but what do they look like, what different types are available, what should I be fitting?

And then there is hosing. High pressure, low pressure, steel overbraid, stainless steel, rubber hose finishers, anodised hose finishers, various clips etc.

I have no idea if I have an 8V filter or an Mi filter on mine. All I know is I have what I assume is a 'normal fuel hose with some wire braid over the top. It started leaking at the rail end recently after I removed it cos the wire braid was frayed, so I pulled it back and trimmed 1cm off of the hose and it seems to be OK now.

But as I'm going on a tart up mission in the engine bay I'd really like to replace the hoses too. So what should i be looking for in terms of hose type, bore size, and fixing clips?

I understand that it's a good idea to fit an alternative filter due to the issues getting the hose to seal on the 8v filter, and like I said before, I have read old topics, but it's the stuff about Banjos that don;t understand. So what filter should I go for and what banjos etc will I need.

Sorry for all the questions, but I really need some education on this subject :D

A Banjo is a type of fuel connector. It looks a bit like a banjo if you stretch your imagination :)

Basically, it is round and has a hollow perforated bolt running through the middle of it. The bolt will have copper washers either side of it. The fuel feeds up through the hollow, perforated bolt and exits through the neck of the banjo.

These are most commonly seen on the ends of a standard 8V fuel filter which is an alloy cylinder about the size of an oil filter. They can be a 'mare to seal. The trick is to alwas use new copper washers and not do them up too tightly. Just enough to seal.

Fuel hose is special and you must only use hose that is rated for fuel injection use. Clips are special too, normal jubilee clips just won't do. You need those that go right round the hose with a small bolt through them. They must be very carefully sized to the pipe.

Overbraid just means a hose with a stainless steel woven braid over the top of of it. A bit like a braided brake hose. The braid is there for physical protection only, the underlying hose being ordinary fuel hose. IMO, it is not needed in a standard roadgoing MI.

Hope that helps...

merlin motorsport supply nice shiney blue ones as well :) top of the 8v filter is M12 in size and needs a 10mm push on adaptor with some 10mm hose to fit the Mi fuel rail. The return on the fuel rail is 8mm, I think, which a bit loose when pushing onto the soild hose which runs under the car, so make sure its on tight!

Just slightly off topic.

Has anyone got a simple solution for changing the push on hoses ie onto regulator, regulator into fuel rail , fuel pump fittings into srew on ones ?

I want to use PTFE lined fuel hose not just rubber overbraided, the main problem being that this doesn't crush down over fittings with jubilee clips it really needs swaged screw fittings.

cheers

Can anybody reccomend some decent suppliers for this kind of thing, hose in particular.

Rallydesign and merlin motorsport have been suggested, but merlin dont appear to do any hose, and rallydesign dont sell anything bigger than 8mm.

Cheers, James.

try ringing Merlin Motorsport, if they sell the fittings they should sell the hose as well.
