matty_gti 20 Posted August 4, 2007 Theres allways somthing isnt there, first it wanted a new head and now ive lost some bloody gears!. Ive noticed it over a couple of days and now driving back from the pub i have to pull away in 2nd because it just wont stay in 1st!. The only way i can pull away in 1st is if i really hold it in there otherwise it just grinds!!!. When driving along it will only half go into 3rd and 5th and either pop out or just wont go in at all unless im really pusing it and holding it there. 2nd, 4th and reverse are fine....its just the top gears!. Any help guys!!!! Matt
jim21070 2 Posted August 5, 2007 The fact that you've lost gears when the gearstick is pushed forward very strongly suggests a problem with the linkages. I don't think there is any internal problem in the 'box. Check particularly the bellcrank attached to the front subframe.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted August 5, 2007 As Jim's said I doubt it's a box problem as 1&2 share the same selector as does 4&5 and all it does is slide up & dowbn n a thick metal rod, The Ball on the subframe is a common problem, The nut just comes loose and it wobbles around like no tomorrow

Hi, Thats what i thought as it will only go half way into the gear and if it does stay in it will just pop out again. The bell crank?, ive never had problems with my 'box before. GLPoomobile 958 Posted August 5, 2007 Theres allways somthing isnt there, first it wanted a new head and now ive lost some bloody gears!. Now just try and back track. Where did you last have them? Sorry
jim21070 2 Posted August 5, 2007 The bell crank? A bellcrank is what I call the "L" shaped piece with balljoints on it that turn the gearstick linkages through 90 degrees to operate the selector levers on the gearbox. The bellcrank is mounted on a balljoint that is fixed to the subframe. This balljoint becomes loose where it is bolted to the subframe, resulting in a very sloppy change. Internally, the only thing that could or might cause this is a sheared rollpin on the gear selector gate/interlock but it is very unlikely as it is heavy-duty construction inside. matty_gti 20 Posted August 5, 2007 Now just try and back track. Where did you last have them?Sorry I replaced the head and i have done just over 1k miles since , it has just started to do it. Well i had a good old fiddle and the long rod thats at the top of the 'l' sahpe lever was ver very loose so i quickly replaced with another one i had and now i can get 3rd and 5th, only once i cudnt get 3rd, and 1st is still a bit dodgy .........i think i may just replace all the rods!, any ideas on where to get them?
