Plug On Top Of Inlet

after having a general poke about in my engine bay, i found the plug on the top of the inlet has a wire not going to anything.

 

i think it is number 12, i might be wrong but if anyone could tell me the numbers and where they go it would be a help a lot.

IIRC thats a diagnostic connection.

If its a brown plug with three wires into it it is just a diagnostic (true rpm) sensor used when plugged into the Pug tuning equipment.

 

Quite often the plug or wires are melted due to falling down against the exhaust manifold.

thanks boys, so is it not critical with the running of the car???

 

the rev counter doesnt work would this be the problem (the loose wire?)

No its not critical & the fact that your rev counter isn't working shouldn't be related to this.

 

After re-reading your first post though I think we have got mixed up with the original answers. For some reason I though you'd said on top of the rocker cover (as I guess did welshpug) because there is a plug that hooks under a tab on there which is the diagnostic socket & only used by Peugeot or a garage with the right equipment.

 

To clarify a little more though, does your car have the coil on the inlet manifold & this is a small length of white wire with a spade connector on the end thats connected to nothing? If it is then its still not used anyway but the signal from the rev counter also goes from a different pin on the coil plug but it could just be a blown fuse thats stopped it working.

sorry for the confusion boys, (long days at work and late nights) thats the one i was on about the coil on top of the inlet, so its not important thats good, i will check the fuses to see about the rev counter tomorrow when i get a chance.

 

apon further poking around at the weekend, i took the battery and afm out( hopefully buying one this week fingers crossed) and found a mess of wires underneath, first glance there is a really bad brown plug, its obviously got hot and pratically crumbled in my fingers, to save confusion ill double check tomorrow as to what it is and does, just wondering really can plugs still be purchased???

 

also ive read about people cleaning the throttle body with carb cleaner is there any special techniques because i might aswell do this while the afm is off?

 

sorry if this has all been spoken about before.

thanks for the help weshpug, the first post sort of went straight over my head, but the second one i can relate to, thats helped me out, i think im going to purchase one and change the plug.

 

can any one help with the carb cleaner in the throttle body? is it just a case of spraying it in?? i know i might be sounding stupid but new to these top characteristics of french cars lol

yes spray it in and most of the gunk will just wash out. What doesnt come of immediatley soon shifts with a toothbrush.
