trickywoo 0 Posted August 3, 2007 I've got a small leak coming from the gearbox end cover (that you can see from the left wheel arch). The cover is a bit rusty but does not look too bad (the metal must have been very thin to start with). Seeing as the oil sits largely below the level of that cover and its not under pressure do you think I might get away with a good cleaning and some thick coats of hammerite? Or would I be wasting my time and really need a new cover?
welshpug 1,657 Posted August 3, 2007 best to take it off and weld it up, its only steel, and is about 3mm thick IIRC. personally I'd want to find out wether its rusted from inside out or outside in, either way some debris might have got into the box so it would be best to take the coverr off to inspect it. is it a BE gearbox? here's a part number for you if it is (BE1/5 and 3/5 are the same end cover) 2207 94 GEAR-BOX COVER 32.38 GBP 38.05 GBP inc VAT
trickywoo 0 Posted August 3, 2007 (edited) Thanks. It may well be corroded from the inside as well becasue the outside does not look too bad. The box has been noisey for a long time and I was going to put another one on when the clutch needed doing. Edited August 3, 2007 by trickywoo
Rupertfinch 6 Posted August 3, 2007 Tricky Woo - have you some sort of psychic abilities? This is just the question I require answered, well done sir. Thanks for the part numbers Welshpug - much appreciated as I've searched through my parts CD and never been able to find the exact item. Apologies for the hi-jack but can I push my luck even further? Is it sensible to put instant gasket maker on the lip of the gearbox before reattaching old (mended) cover or shiney new cover? I'm not convinced my leak is structural and may be resolved in this manner, although I don't know if it's appropriate for a gearbox. Cheers, Mark (Rupertfinch)
