Braided Brake Lines

Im in the middle of swapping the beam on a 1.6 to a 309 beam and will change the front brakes at the same time to 1.9 items (got hubs/shafts) but keeping the 1.6 compensator and m/c since they are apparently better and will save me forking out on new 1.9 compensators

 

Should i be buying braided lines for the 1.9 or for 1.6. Not sure as im using a combo of the two

 

Im thinking 1.9 hoses....that right?

The hoses that go round the beam are different on the 1.6 (well, one of them is).

 

Best bet is to buy the 1.6 set, which only has the front and beam hoses, then try and source the extra pair for the rears seperately.

Or to save hassle, get some custom made ones.

If i split the rear copper line into a T and take them to the beam mounting points, could i then use the the 1.9 sections to the calipers?Where do i get custom made ones or is it a garage jobbie?sorry i didnt mention that i will be using 1.9 brake setup all round, ie front and rear calipers

Not exactly sure what you mean, as the 1.6 set up has a T to split the 2 rear section, which is why the flexi are different in the first place.

 

IIRC, you can use the front and rear flexis from the 1.9 kit, but it's the 2 that go over the beam tube that are different. Again IIRC, with the 1.9 setup these flexis are female at both ends, but on the 1.6 they are female at one end and male at the other.

Wish I had known that when we did ours. Just to makes things confusing we had a 1.9 braided kit, on rear discs which were on a 1.6 converted rear beam.................in the end we just gave up with the goodridge stuff and just custom made our own. Much nicer IMHO.

so the best option is to buy some copper pipe and the 1.9 braided set and just redo the lot?

Basically, it's the T piece in the 1.6 system that is the problem.

 

On a 1.9, the 2 solid lines under the car join 2 flexis going over the beam. These 2 flexis are female at both ends IIRC. On the 1.6 you have a solid line under the car which terminates in a T near the beam. The T has 3 female inputs, 1 taking in the solid line from the front of the car, 1 taking in the solid line that runs across to the other side of the car parallel to the beam, and the third has the passenger side flexi that goes over the beam. Hence this flexi has a male end and a female end. I can't remember if the flexi on the drivers side is the same to be honest, but looking at it logically it probably is a normal female/female flexi on the drivers side since it has a solid attached at each end whereas the passnger side has the T at one end and a solid line at the other. Still with me?

 

So, the easiest solution would be to have the whole lot made up for you. I'm sure if you spoke to any number of specialists mentioned on this forum who have a hand in motorsport they will know exactly what you need without too much prompting.

 

Alternatively, keep an eye on ebay for 1.9 and 1.6 kits and then mix and match.

 

Redoing the whole lot (by which I assume you mean making it like the original 1.9 set up with a hard line down each side of the car and individual compensators) is way too much work IMO.
