Standard Gauges

hi ya,i have just put a recon 1.9 engine in2 my pug.but i think i may have wired up the gauges wrong.the water temp,oil pressure and temp.how can i test them to make sure i have put the right wire to the write sensor please?..

short the wires straight to the block and see which guage moves / light comes on etc.
