Icv, Hows It Work?

Recommended Posts

Edd-XS

Right, since Ive had my Mi back its never idled properly, always too high (bout 1.5k), the ICV was pretty sticky even after cleaning so I replaced it the other day and Ill be f***ed if i can get it to idle properly! I did remove the screw to give the new one a clean through so it moves nice and free now, but when off, is the icv supposed to be slightly open, or closed? Im assuming its supposed to stay slightly open to allow an idle but adjusting it when running doesnt seem to make a difference? It was rock steady at 1k all last night, then a mile from home it jumped up to 3k! AFM is also sitting flat (plug facing towards front of the car) and Throttle body isnt worn... Any ideas?

Thanks

Edd

I had the same problem with mine after the conversion. Make sure that the throttle switch is working, and that the pins in the plug for it haven't pushed out.

Check between the contacts with the plug off. Pin1-pin2 continuity at closed throttle, which should be broken immediately when you open the throttle. Pin2-pin3 continuity from about 3/4 to full throttle. When it's set correctly (adjust initial position by loosening the two 7mm bolts and move, then re-tighten), with the engine off you can hear it click as soon as the throttle is moved from the closed position.

Having said all that, idling problems are invariably air leaks, usually in the oil breather system.

I think you might be onto something with the breather issue as im getting an odd 'chirping' coming from the engine bay too, which I dont think is air leak as Ive already sorted that!

What is very odd though, is how first thing in the morning idle is still high (just over 2k), and for the majority of the journey to work it stays above 1.5k at idle, then in the afternoon and all evening, it will be perfect at 1k, wether i stop, start leave it for a few hours or what!

Is it possible the ECU is resetting itself or something over night :S I dont disconnect the battery or anything?

Anyone else had this?

Thanks

Edd
