welshpug 1,657 Posted July 31, 2007 a quick one here, I have an intake manifold and a thermostat housing to re-fit, both of which were originally fitted with a gasket, can I refit these using some sealant or would I be better off getting the gaskets? (bearing in mind I have sealant, but not the gaskets, though I may be able to make some...)
Anthony 1,003 Posted July 31, 2007 I use RTV sealant for most of the gasket surfaces on engines (including the two you mention) and it's always been fine. RTV is your friend

djinuk 2 Posted August 1, 2007 persoanly i would pay the £1.90 for a inlet manifold gasket, and the thermostat i would use water based gasket
welshpug 1,657 Posted August 1, 2007 £1.90? where? GSF want £3.50, and pug want £5.50! too late now
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted August 1, 2007 Last inlet manifold gasket I got from GSF was 50p iirc & the thermostat housing gasket is approx £3 iirc. Personally I'd use the correct gasket, especially for the thermostat housing if at all possible, better than discovering its got a leak & having to drain the cooling system etc to either re-seal it or fit the gasket. djinuk 2 Posted August 2, 2007 i use trade at ces and pay them prices, was £4.60 for plugs, £9 for leads £47 for starter motor and £1.90 for inlet gasket
matty_gti 20 Posted August 2, 2007 I Just used gasket paper for the thermostat...it was cheap, just takes a few minutes to cut it to the correct shape.

Alastairh 47 Posted August 2, 2007 Hi my name is Anthony, im addicted to RTV sealant. I use it for all gasket surfaces on engines, which means i use it everyday because I work on engines everyday. Most nights i have to smell it so i can go to sleep. RTV is your friend Yeah, RTV is good
Stonesie 0 Posted August 4, 2007 (edited) RTV is good and has its place..... and that place is not in the inlet where its likely to be exposed to petrol, i made that mistake with my old VW scirocco. The RTV swelled up within a couple of weeks and started leaking (anyone who knows the VW 1.8 8v engines will know what fun the inlet is to get off..... i won't do that again) Its fine for the thermostat housing if you have no choice.
